Chapter 2, Problem 80A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The law of conservation of mass needs to be applied to the observation of the melting of wax when the candle is burned.

Concept Introduction: When a substance changes its appearance or change in the state takes place and there is no change in its chemical composition, the change is said to be physical. On the other hand, when there is a change in the chemical composition of a substance or a new substance is formed after a chemical reaction, it is known as a chemical change. According to the law of conservation of mass, if a reactant is converted into a product, the total mass is conserved.

Explanation of Solution

When the candle is burned, the melting of wax takes place and it causes the wax to disappear. Here, oxidation of wax takes place which results in the form of carbon dioxide gas. Here, carbon dioxide gas dissipates in the air and thus, cannot be measured. According to the law of conservation of mass, the total mass of reactant is equal to the total mass of product formed.

Here, wax is disappearing in the form of carbon dioxide. The mass is still conserved.
