The variation with temperature of the viscosity of air is represented well by the empirical Sutherland correlation
Best-fit values of b and S are given in Appendix A. Develop an equation in SI units for kinematic viscosity versus temperature for air at atmospheric pressure. Assume ideal gas behavior. Check by using the equation to compute the kinematic viscosity of air at 0°C and at 100°C and comparing to the data in Appendix A (Table A.10); plot the kinematic viscosity for a temperature range of 0°C to 100°C, using the equation and the data in Table A.10.

- A single-cylinder rotational viscometer is used to measurea liquid with viscosity of 100 cP using a spindle with 6 cmlength and 1 cm radius. At maximum shear rate (rpm560),the measurements approach a full-scale reading of 100.Determine the spindle dimensions that will allow theviscometer to measure viscosities up to 10,000 cP atmaximum shear rate. A considerable amount of research has been carried out in an attempt to understand the exact nature of the temperature variation of viscosity. One relatively simple model assumes that the viscosity obeys an 'Arrhenius-like' equation of the form n = Xe(k)r Хе --------Equation 1 where X = 1.7419 and (E/R) = -0.018 are constants for a given fluid. The viscosity of water, for instance, is less than that of molasses and honey, just as the viscosity of light motor oil is less than that of grease. A unit used in mechanical engineering to describe viscosity is called the poise, named after the physiologist Jean Louis Poiseuille, who performed early experiments in fluid mechanics. The unit is defined by 1 poise = 0.1 (N s)/m2. Show that 1 poise is also equivalent to 1 g/(cm · s). %3Darrow_forward
