Chapter 2, Problem 22C, CASE 2-22 Plantwide versus Departmental Overhead Rates; Pricing LO2-1, LO2-2, LO2-3, LO2-4 'Blast

'Blast it!” said David Wilson, president of Teledex Company. “We’ve just lost the bid on the Koopers job by $2000. It seems we’re either too half to pet the job or too low to make any money on half the jobs we bid.”
Teledex Company manufactures products to customers' specifications and uses a job-order costing system The company uses a plantwide predetermined overhead rate based on direct labor cost to apply its manufacturing overhead (assumed to be all feed) to jobs, The following estimates were made at the beginning of the year.

Department
FabricatingMachiningAssemblyTotal Plant

Manufacturing overhead....$350,000$400,000$90,000$840,000

Direct labor.......$200,000$100,000$300,000$600,000

Jobs require varying amounts of work in the three departments. The Koopers job, for example, would have required manufacturing costs in the three departments as follows:

Department

    Fabricating Machining Assembly Total Plant
    Direct materials
    $3,000
    $200 $1,400 $4,600
    Direct labor $2,800 $500 $6,200 $9,500
    Manufacturing overhead ...

Required:

  1. Using the company's plantwide approach:
    a. Compute the predetermined overhead rate for each department for the current year.

b. Determine the amount of manufacturing overhead cost that would have been applied to the Koopers job.

  • Suppose that instead of using a plantwide predetermined overhead rate, the company had used departmental predetermined overhead rates based on direct labor cost. Under theseconditions:
  • Explain the difference between the manufacturing overhead that would have been applied to the Koopers job using the plantwide approach in question 1 (b) and using the
  • Assume that it is customary in the industryto bid jobs at 150% of total manufacturing cost (direct materials, direct labor, and applied overhead). What was the company's bid price on the Koopers job using a plantwide predetermined overhead rate? What would the bid price have been if departmental predetermined overhead rates had been used to apply overhead cost?

Question 2 Black and White (B&W) is a building business that provides a range of building services to the public. Recently they have been asked to quote for garage conversions (GC) and extensions to properties (EX) and have found that they are winning fewer GC contracts than expected. B&W has a policy to price all jobs at budgeted total cost plus 52%. Overheads are currently absorbed on a labour hour basis. B&W thinks that a switch to activity based costing (ABC) to absorb overheads would reduce the cost associated to GC and hence make them more competitive. C6.43 Job costing; department overhead cost allocation: tour operator LO 6.72 Asian Adventure Holidays offers a series of holiday packages aimed at families, seniors and corporate groups. The financial controller, Jack Tallis, is preparing for the annual board meeting and is concerned about the loss that the business sustained in the past year. He has examined the profits for each of the three departments of the business-family, seniors and corporate-and it seems that the corporate department is the source of the problem. Jack has asked you to assist him to look more closely at the three packages offered by the corporate department, to see which holiday packages are Page 285 profitable and which are not. The three packages are to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. The sales and direct costs of each corporate package for last year are as follows: Bali Adventure Thailand Discovery Malaysian Orienteering Number of packages sold 10 20 10 Number of people per package 5 6 8 Revenue per person…
Problem 5 (Linear Cost Approximation) Tita Lopez, managing director of the ABS Consulting Group, is examining how overhead costs behave with variations in monthly professional labor- hours billed to clients. Assume the following historical data: Professional Labor-Hours Billed to Clients Total Overhead Costs P340,000 400.000 435,000 477,000 529.000 587.000 3,000 4,000 5,000 6.000 7,000 8.000 Required: 1. Compute the linear cost function, relating total overhead cost to professional labor-hours, using the representative observations of 4,000 and 7,000 hours. component of the cost function represent the fixed overhead costs of the ABS Consulting Group? Why? Plot the linear cost function. Does the constant What wouid be the predicted total overhead costs for (a) 5,000 hours, and (b) 8.000 hours using the cost function estimated in requirement 1? Plot the predicted costs and actual costs for 5,000 and 8,000 hours. 3. Lopez had a chance to accept a special job that would have boosted…
