Introduction:

Spectrometer is an optical instrument which is used to separate and determine the wavelength of various colors in the light spectra. In other words, this scientific device is used to measure the variations in the physical characteristics specified over a given range.

In the prism, the violet color bends more than other colors whereas in grating, red color undergoes more diffraction than other colors. So, by observing red or violet end of the spectrum that makes the largest angle with the direction of incident light beam, one can identify the device which is used in the spectrometer.
