Concept explainers
To determine:
Definition of the terms pellicle, trichocyst, contractile vacuole, pseudopod, and test.
Explanation of Solution
Pellicle is a thin layer of a supporting cell membrane in many protozoa. It is present below the cell membrane.
Trichocyst: It is a rod-like structure from which the filament and is found nearby the surface of the ciliates and dinoflagellates.
Contractile vacuole: it is a bubble-like structure that is known to have a function in osmoregulation as well as the removal of waste.
Pseudopod: It is a temporary extension of the cytoplasm that helps in the locomotion of several protozoans found especially in the amoeboid cells.
Test: It is a covering of the amoeba-like organism, which partially covers the animals and through the gap between covering pseudopodia protrudes out when required.
