TREPONEMA PALLIDUM HAEMAGGLUTINATION TEST (TPHA)
Syphilis is a complex disease which is normally sexually transmitted. The causative organism, Treponema pallidum cannot be grown on conventional laboratory culture media or in the tissue culture. Infection is normally diagnosed by directing antibodies specific for T. pallidum in the patient’s serum or CSF.
Antibody becomes detectable at about 3-4 weeks following exposure, and may remain at detectable levels for long periods after treatment. Two groups of antibodies are formed: one reacting with the non-treponemal antigens used in the VDRL / Carbon antigen and RPR tests, and the other reacting with the specific antigens of T. pallidum. Antibody to non-treponemal antigens is found (normally) in active disease and the levels subside after successful treatment. Specific antibody persists long after the infection has been successfully treated. It is necessary to test for both groups of antibody since the non-treponemal antibody may…

Below is the summary of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. What sorts of ethical problems does this study present?
Tuskegee syphilis study, it’s official name is “Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male”. It’s an American medical research project that earned notoriety for its unethical experimentation on African American patients in the rural South. The project was conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service from 1932 to 1972 to examine the natural course of untreated syphilis in African American men.
The research was intended to test whether syphilis caused cardiovascular damage more often than neurological damage and to determine if the natural course of syphilis in black men was significantly different from that in whites.
To recruit participants for its study, the PHS enlisted the support of the prestigious Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), located in Macon County, Alabama. A group of 399 infected patients and 201 uninfected control patients were…

- On October 29, the North Carolina Division of Public Health (NCDPH) received a report of three cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) among children caused by Escherichia coli O157:H7 infection. All three children visited a petting zoo at the North Carolina State Fair during October 15-24. Case finding efforts by NCDPH identified 105 other persons who had become ill with diarrhea after attending the fair. A case-control study was undertaken to identify risk factors for infection with E. coli 0157:H7. Forty-five case-patients and 188 controls who attended the fair and did not get sick were enrolled in the study. A p-value of 0.05 was set as the cutoff for statistical significance. Thirty-six (80%) of 45 case-patients visited the petting zoo, compared with 64 (36%) of 187 controls (odds ratio= 7.7; p<0.0001). In an analysis of case-patients and controls who were aged <6 years who visited the petting zoo, the following results were found: Exposure Touching or stepping in manure Falling…arrow_forwardA 38 year-old woman went to a hospital and complained of a non-productive cough and dyspnea, which has progressed over two weeks. Infected children residing in Limpopo and Mpumalanga and visited the parks accounted for 36% and 16% respectively. No older individuals were affected. The causative agent was determined to be a member of the viral genus Morbillivirus in the Paramyxoviridaefamily. The disease is known to spread by coughing and sneezing, close personal contact ordirect contact with infected nasal or throat secretions of the infected children. 4.1. - The vertical transmission of certain communicable diseases from mother-to-child during pregnancy and birth is of great concern to public health practitioners because it represents a critical period for intervention. If practitioners can determine at birth whether the disease has been transmitted from mother-to-child, they can act immediately to provide the child with treatment. Syphilis is a disease with high risk for vertical transmission from mother-to-child. If a child becomes infected and is not treated, there can be negative health outcome such as blindness, deafness, and neurological damage. Inspired by the advent of rapid HIV tests that provide quick results and are minimally invasive, suppose that researchers have been working to develop a similar test that can be used for syphilis. After obtaining appropriate institutional approval and patient consent, the researchers test their rapid syphilis test at several birthing hospitals and compare it to the gold standard laboratory…arrow_forwardThe vertical transmission of certain communicable diseases from mother-to-child during pregnancy and birth is of great concern to public health practitioners because it represents a critical period for intervention. Some people who become infected with SARS-CoV-2 will not develop signs and/or symptoms of disease As it is transmitted through the global human population, the virus is highly genetically stable and does not change Emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants may sometimes be more transmissible than previous strainsarrow_forward
