Explanation of Solution

The atmospheric carbon dioxide is a mixture of C614O2 and C612O2 which are present in a fixed ratio. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and form cellulose (wood). When the plant is alive, the ratio of C614 and C612 atoms is the same as that of the atmosphere but when the plant died, this ratio starts decreasing due to a decrease in the amount of C614 in the plant. C614 decays by beta emission. The equation is: 614C 714+ 1 0e

Now the age of the rock can be determined by the following equation:

Where, t= age of the wood.

  t1/2= half-life of C614

  N0=C614C612 ratio in the living (fresh) plant
