Chapter 17, Problem 3TY
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

The human genome is packed inside the nucleus of the cell. It is made up of double stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) folded in a helical manner. DNA is negatively charged and is wrapped around histone proteins that are positively charged. Histone proteins further form an octameric structure known as the nucleosome. The genome is usually in chromatin form and is not visible, but at the time of cell division it condenses to form X shaped structures known as chromosomes. The number of chromosomes varies from organism to organism. The smallest functional unit of the genome is known as a gene. Genes code for proteins that help the organism function.

Students have asked these similar questions
Which of the following sequences is correct?     a. Nucleotides → gene →DNA → Chromosome b. DNA → Chromosomes → Gene → genome c.Nucleotide → DNA → gene → Chromosome   d. Genome → gene → DNA → nucleotide
The nucleotides from a bacterial cell were found to have the following abundances: 39% uracil; 41% adenine, 9% cytosine; 8% guanine. What type of molecule is the genome of the bacteria likely made of?  a. Double stranded DNA  b. Single stranded DNA c. Messenger RNA d. Double stranded RNA
A building block of DNA is a nucleotide, which consists of one deoxyribose, one phosphate group, and one nitrogenous base. Adenine and guanine are pyrimidine base: cytosine and thymine are purine bases. A. Both statements are correct B. Both statements are incorrect C. Statement 1 is correct. Statement 2 is incorrect D.
