List four functions of the respiratory system.
To determine: The function of the respiratory system.
Introduction: The respiratory system of humans consists of a sequence of organs which are responsible for the intake of oxygen and expelling of carbon dioxide. This exchange of gases takes place with the help of the primary organ of the respiratory system called the lungs.
Explanation of Solution
The four major roles of the nervous system are as follows:
- Gaseous exchange between the atmosphere and the lungs:
Oxygen is taken inside the body and distributed to all the tissues, and CO2 is eliminated as metabolic waste produced.
- Homeostatic control of pH by the body:
The pH of the body is altered by the lungs so that CO2 is retained and eliminated selectively.
- Providing protection from the pathogens:
The epithelial layer of the respiratory system is well equipped with defense mechanisms so that probably harmful substances can be trapped and destroyed before entering the body.
- Regulates vocalization:
When air moves across the vocal cords, the vibrations are produced that are useful for singing, speech, and other forms of communication.
The four primary roles of the respiratory system are a gaseous exchange, pH regulation, protection, and vocalization.
