Watch this short video (http://openstaxcollege.org/l/facialnerve) to see an examination of the facial nerve using some simple tests. The facial nerve controls the muscles of facial expression. Severe deficits will be obvious in watching someone use those muscles for normal control. One side of the face might not move like the other side. But directed tests, especially for contraction against resistance, require a formal testing of the muscles. The muscles of the upper and lower face need to be tested. The strength test in this video involves the patient squeezing her eyes shut and the examiner trying to pry her eyes open. Why does the examiner ask her to try a second time?

- For this set of questions you will need to stand up from the chair you are sitting in, and then sit back down. Do this slowly so that you can pay attention to what is happening, and if necessary feel the tone of the muscles in your legs as your standing and sitting (If you are lying down or standing start from a seated position, then stand, then sit). a) During the standing phase, what function is being carried out at the hip joint? b) What are the prime movers (agonists) that are responsible for this particular movement (Hint: You should be able to feel them activated)? c) During the standing phase, what function is being carried out at the knee joint? d) What are the prime movers (agonists) that are responsible for this particular movement (Hint: You should be able to feel them activated)? e) As you sit back down, you realize that some of the same muscles activated during standing are also active when going from standing to sitting. The biceps brachii is innervated by the musculocutaneous nerve and the triceps brachii is innervated by the radial nerve. When the biceps tendon is tapped with a hammer, action potential generation ___________ in the musculocutaneous nerve and _____________ in the radial nerve. Select one: a. Increases; decreases b. - Bell’s palsy is a disorder of the facial nerve involving temporary or permanent paralysis of the muscles of facial expression. Which muscles of the head and face would be unaffected by Bell’s palsy?arrow_forwardThe muscular makeup of the dorsal region is a complex arrangement of a variety of different muscles with various functions to provide support while allow muscles provide the anterior support and also aid the back muscles in movement such as lifting an object. Some back pains are the result of weak abdom column. Study the muscles of the back and the abdominal regions and match the correct term with the correct PRIMARY function. » View Available Hint(s) Reset Help External intercostals Longus capitis Interspinales Quadratus lumborum Longus colli Transversus abdominis Internal intercostals Spinalis cervicis Multifidus Semispinalis cervicis Extensors Flexors Levators Depressors Compressors Submit Part D-Pelvic musclesarrow_forwardFill in the blank: The effector of the knee-jerk reflex is the _______________________ muscle.arrow_forward

- A tap on the patellar tendon at the knee joint is used to test the knee-jerk reflex. All of the followings are correct, except ---------------------. The reflex starts with the 1a sensory neurons of the muscle spindle There is an excitatory stimulus to the motor pool of the extensor muscle There is a stimulation of the excitatory interneuron of the flexor muscle Excitation of the extensor muscle fibers causes the knee extension Muscle contraction depends on coordination between motor pools of antagonistic musclesarrow_forwardStretch reflexes occur in many of the muscles of the body.
