Concept Introduction:
Spectator ions are regarded as ions that do not appear in the net ionic equation of an acid base reaction. This is because they are usually the conjugate base corresponding to strong acids such as chloride, iodide, bromide, or nitrate ions.
Brønsted–Lowry acid transfers a proton and form base as the other compound that can accept a proton. This is called conjugate acid-base pair. In pair of conjugate acid and base, the acid form is protonated and the base form lost the proton.

Chemistry: Principles and Practice
- Equal molar quantities of ammonia and sodium dihydrogen phosphate (NaH2PO4) are mixed. (a) Write a balanced, net ionic equation for the acid-base reaction that can, in principle, occur. (b) Does the equilibrium lie to the right or left?arrow_forwardA solution contains 0.675 g of ethylamine, C2H5NH2, per 100.0 mL of solution. Electrical conductivity measurements at 20C show that 0.98% of the ethylamine has reacted with water. Write the equation for this reaction. Calculate the pH of the solution.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is a strong acid in aqueous solution? (a) Mg(OH)2 (b) NH3 (c) H2SO4 (d) CH3COOH (e) AgClarrow_forward
- Calcium propionate [Ca(CH₃CH₂COO)₂; calcium pro-panoate] is a mold inhibitor used in food, tobacco, and pharma-ceuticals. (a) Use balanced equations to show whether aqueouscalcium propionate is acidic, basic, or neutral. (b) Find the resulting pH when 8.75 g of Ca(CH₃CH₂COO)₂ dissolves in enough water to give 0.500 L of solution.arrow_forwardClassify each cation as a weak acid or pH-neutral.(a) C5H5NH+ (b) Ca2 + (c) Cr3 +arrow_forwardSay whether the following salt solutions would be acidic, basic or neutral. Explain your answer in each case. (a) NH4NO3 (b) KNO3 (c) Al(NO3)2 (d) Na(CH3COOarrow_forward
- (a) Is a weak Brønsted-Lowry base necessarily a weak Lewis base? Explain with an example.(b) Identify the Lewis bases in the following reaction: Cu(H₂O)₄²⁺(aq)+4CN(aq) ⇌ Cu(CN)₄²⁻(aq)+4H₂O(l)(c) Given that Kc>1 for the reaction in part (b), which Lewis base is stronger?arrow_forwardPredict the pH (>7, <7, OR =7) of aqueous solutions containing the following salts: (a) KBr (b) Al(NO3)3 (c) BaCl2 (d) Bi(NO3)3arrow_forward(a) 33. Which one of the following statements regarding acid-base property is NOT correct? pH + pOH = 14, for all aqueous solutions The pH of 108 (M) HCl solution is 8 The conjugate base of H₂PO4 is HPO4 ²- H₂SO4 is a strong acid in aqueous solution (b) (c) (d)arrow_forward
- Consider an aqueous solution of NaHSO3(a) Write down the charge balance equation of the solution.(b) Write down the mass balance equation of the solution.(c) Starting with the expressions in (a) and (b), derive an expression for [H3O+].(d) Calculate the pH of the NaHSO3 solution, if its molarity is 0.069 M.[H2SO3: Ka1 = 1.23 x 10-2; Ka2 =6.6 x 10-8]arrow_forwardA solution of 0.112 M NaOH (37.8 mL) is mixed with 22.0 mL of 0.124 M HNO3 . Assuming that the final volume is the sum of the initial volumes, calculate: (a) the molarity of the Na+ cation (b) the molarity of the NO3 - anion (c) the pH of the final solution (d) the pOH of the final solutionarrow_forwardExcept for the Na spectator ion, aqueous solutions of CH₃COOH and CH₃COONa contain the same species. (a) Whatare the species (other than H₂O)? (b) Why is 0.1 M CH₃COOH acidic and 0.1 M CH₃COONa basic?arrow_forward
