Chapter 15, Problem 10STP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The compound with largest equivalent weight is to be chosen.

Concept introduction:

Equivalent weight of an acid is calculated by dividing the molecular weight of compound by basicity of the acid.

Basicity of acid is the number of hydrogen ion it can replace in aqueous medium.

Answer to Problem 10STP

D

Explanation of Solution

  Molecular weight of HCl=1 g/mol+35.5 g/mol

               =36.5 g/mol

Basicity of HCl =1

Equivalent weight of HCl will be:

  Equivalent weight=36.51

Molecular weight of H2SO4 will be:

  M=(2+32+64) g/mol

   =98 g/mol

Basicity of H2SO4 =2

  Equivalent weight of H2SO4=982

                =49

Thus,

  Molecular weight of H3PO4=3+31+64

               =98 g/mol

Basicity of H3PO4 =3

  Equivalent weight of H3PO4=983

               =32.67

Thus,

  Molecular weight of HNO3=(1+14+48) g/mol

              =63 g/mol

Basicity of HNO3 =1

  Equivalent weight of HNO3=631

               =63

Conclusion

The mathematical calculations shows option D is right and remaining options are wrong.
