To review:
The examples of general somatic sensation and special visceral sensation.
Introduction:
The complex structure of the brain and the spinal cord together constitute the central nervous system of the body. The nervous system excluding the brain and the spinal cord is termed as the peripheral nervous system. This nervous system is segregated into two parts, namely sensory division and motor division.
Explanation of Solution
The inputs which are sensory in nature and the motor outputs are subdivided into somatic or visceral. Somatic sensory neurons innervate the outer tube while the visceral organs are innervated by means of visceral neurons. The sensory inputs can be either general or special. The name autonomic nervous system is given to the visceral motor division of the peripheral nervous system and it has two branches named parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions.
The sensations of touch and pain from the somatic organs are some of the examples of general somatic sensations while taste and smell involving gustatory and olfactory receptors, respectively are included in special visceral sensations.
