Chapter 13.4, Problem 49SSC
To determine

Relation between bending and atoms of the solids and why liquids do not bent.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 49SSC

The particles in solid are tightly bound thus it can be bent. But particles in liquid flow freely, hence it cannot be bent.

Explanation of Solution

Introduction: Solid is a state of matter in which molecules are closely bound together. Due to closely bounded molecules, solids have a definite shape which changes when an external force is applied on it. A liquid is incompressible fluid that adapts the shape of the container it is poured in. Its volume is definite but shape is not.

In solid, particles are closer that makes them tightly bounded. Solids vibrate about a fixed position due to which solid could be bent but it strongly resists bending.

Whereas particles in liquids are spread apart, neither they are tightly bounded. As the particles flow past one another, liquid cannot be bent but takes the shape of the container it is filled in.

Conclusion:Particles in solids are tightly bound whereas in liquid they flow freely.
