Chapter 13.2, Problem 15LC
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Variation of boiling point with the atmospheric pressure is to be explained.

Concept Introduction :

Particles are less closely packed in liquids than they are in solids. When kept in a container, liquids adopt that shape. Compression is challenging in liquids because there is less room for particle mobility. Liquids' forms are not fixed in volume while having a fixed volume.

Answer to Problem 15LC

The boiling point of liquids rises as pressure increases because boiling requires more energy.

Explanation of Solution

The temperature at which liquid turns into vapor is called the boiling point. The atmospheric pressure greatly affects a liquid's boiling point. The weight of the atmosphere above the liquid is what is putting pressure on the liquid. This is referred to as atmospheric pressure in an open system. The increase in pressure decreases intermolecular spaces which tend to increase intermolecular forces of attraction and more energy is required to overcome them.

Thus, the boiling point of liquids rises as pressure increases because boiling requires more energy.
