Chapter 13, Problem 61A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The volume of the oxygen gas under given information is to be determined and the volume of the sulphur dioxide gas is also determined.

Concept introduction:

The ideal gases are those gases which obey the ideal gas equation and the ideal gas equation is written as

  PV= nRT

Where, P = pressure of the gas

V = Volume of the gas

R = Gas constant

T = temperature of the gas

Answer to Problem 61A

The volume of the oxygen gas based on given information is 3L and volume of sulphur dioxide gas is 3.9L

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

The given chemical reaction is

  Cu2S(s)+O2(g)Cu2O(s)+SO2(g)

Calculation:

The balanced chemical equation is

  2Cu2S(s)+3O2(g)2Cu2O(s)+2SO2(g)

Temperature = 27.5°C=27.5+273=300.5 K

Pressure = 0.998atm

Mass of copper = 25g

To calculate number of moles of copper in copper sulphide

  nCu2S=25159.16=0.1571mole

To find the number of moles of volume:

  0.1571mole(Cu2S)3moleo22mole(Cu2S)=0.1178molesnO2=0.1178moles

The volume of the oxygen gas

  According to ideal gasVO2=0.1178×300.5×0.08210.998=2.9L=3L(Approximate)

To find the mass of the sulphur dioxide gas:

  0.1571moles(Cu2S)2mole(SO2)2mole(Cu2S)(64.07g)(SO2)=10.06g

  mSO2=10.06g

The volume of the sulphur dioxide gas:

Number of moles of sulphur dioxide gas is

  nSO2=10.6g64.066=0.1571moles

Now, the volume of the sulphur dioxide gas is

  VSO2=0.1571×300.5×0.08210.998=3.9L=4L(Approximate)

Conclusion

On the basis of the given values, the volume of oxygen gas is 3L and volume of sulphur dioxide gas 3.9L .
