A highway department is considering three alternative routes between two locations. The rate of interest is 8%.
The Department of Traffic is considering three improvement plans for a heavily traveled intersection within the city. The intersection improvement is expected to achieve three goals: improve travel speeds, increase safety, and reduce operating expenses for motorists. The annual dollar value of savings compared with existing conditions for each criterion as well as additional construction and maintenancecosts is shown in the table below. If the economic life of the road is considered to be 60 years and the discount rate is 3.5%, which alternative should be selected? Solve the problem using the four methods for economic analysis.
Create a new highway design. Choose any area of the Philippines where you believe a road infrastructure would be necessary to enhance the city's or province's current transportation system and stimulate the local economy.
This study must include the following:
- Considering alignment, cross-section, pavement design, signage use, and safety features during design or improvement.
-Create a maintenance and rehabilitation plan for the new highway you propose, or for the proposed renovation of the current highway.

- List the basic criteria used for evaluating transportation alternatives. What units are used for measurement?arrow_forwardFor this exercise, you are to design a roadway that is to carry 100,000 people a day (excluding truck occupants) – 50,000 in design direction. The vehicles that carry these people include; (1) personal vehicles (average occupancy of 1.2 people per car) 2-2 kip single axles, and (2) buses with 2-22 kip single axles (assume they are filled with an average of 40 passengers). There are also trucks on the roadway and all trucks have 1-40 kip triple axle, 1-32 kip tandem axle, and 1-8 kip single axle. You know that the soil CBR is 6, the initial PSI is 4.5 and the TSI is 2.5. The first alternative involves improved traffic signaling. The second alternative includes traffic-signal improvements and intersection widening for exclusive left turns. The third alternative includes extensive reconstruction, including a grade separation structure. The construction costs, as well as annual maintenance and user costs, are listed in the following table for each alternative. Determine which alternative is preferred based on economic criteria if the analysis period is 20 years and the annual interest rate is 15%. Use the suitable default values you may need for the solution.arrow_forwardYou are designing a freeway as a passenger-car only facility, and with ideal roadway characteristics. It is estimated that the freeway will have a traffic demand of 75.000 vehicles per day, a free-flow speed of 70 mi/h, a traffic stream of primarily commuters, a peak-hour factor of 0.88 and a directional distribution of 0.65. Determine the number of lanes (both directions) required to provide at least level of service D using the 30th highest annual hourly volume (K30+ 0.12). The answer is a number of lane freeway.arrow_forward
- Please summarize Transportation Policy Analysis and Planning. Please explain its function.arrow_forwardA study showed that during the peak-hour commute on two routes connecting a suburb with a large city, there are a total of 5500 vehicles that make the trip. Route 1 is 7 miles long with a 65-mi/h speed limit and route 2 is 4 miles long with a speed limit of 50 mi/h. The study also found that the travel time on route 2 increases with the square of the number of vehicles, while the route 1 travel time increases two minutes for every 500 additional vehicles added. Determine the user-equilibrium travel time in minutes.arrow_forwardDetermine the different types of Transportation Softwares/Programs that traffic/transportation engineers use.
