Concept explainers
A top view of wheels from a toy cart rolled from a concrete sidewalk onto the following surfaces. Surface A is slightly-rougher concrete, B is coarse grass, and C is cropped gradd on a golf course. When they roll onto the surfaces, they bend from their initial directions. Rank the bending from greatest to least on the surfaces.
Rank the bending from greatest to least on the surfaces.
Answer to Problem 1TC
Toy cart will deviate the most on coarse grass(B), a little less on rougher concrete(A) and least on the cropped grass on golf course(C).
Explanation of Solution
As compared to the concrete sidewalk, all the surfaces (A, B and C) are rougher, so the wheels will become slower. Wheels on the left leave the concrete sidewalk when the toy cart moves over another surface, and then it slows down. The wheel on the right is still on the concrete sidewalk due to which they roll faster. This difference in speed causes the right wheel to travel more distance than the wheel on the left at the same time. As a result, the toy cart bends a little towards left further slower is the speed, greater the bending.
The speed of the wheels will be slowest on the cropped grass on the golf course and will be greatest at the concrete sidewalk. Since the slower speed means the greater bend, so the toy cart will deviate the most on coarse grass, a little less on rougher concrete least on the cropped grass on golf course.
Conclusion:
Therefore, toy cart will deviate the most on coarse grass(B), a little less on rougher concrete(A) and least on the cropped grass on golf course(C).
