Chapter 13, Problem 13.58P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Pressure of H2 molecule when the mean path length is 1 μm, 1 mm and 1 m at 20 °C has to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

Gaseous molecules frequently collide and follow a zig-zag pathway. The mean path length thus tranversed by gaseous particles is called the mean free path. Mathematical expression of mean free path is as follows:

  l=RT(π2)d2NAP

Here,

d represents diameter of the molecule.

NA represents Avogadro’s number.

P represents pressure.

R represents gas constant.

T represents temperature.

l represents mean free path.

This expression can be rearranged to evaluate pressure as follows:

  P=ρRTM

Answer to Problem 13.58P

Pressure of H2 molecule when the mean path length is 1 μm, 1 mm and 1 m is 12498.4 J/m3, 12.4984 J/m3 and 0.01249845 J/m3 respectively.

Explanation of Solution

The formula to convert degree Celsius to kelvin is as follows:

  T(K)=T(°C)+273 K        (1)

Substitute 20 °C for T(°C) in equation (1).

  T(K)=20 °C+273 K=293 K

The formula to convert μm to m is as follows:

  1 μm=106 m

The formula to convert mm to m is as follows:

  1 mm=103 m

Refer to table 13.4 for diameter of molecules.

The molecular diameter of H2 is 270 pm.

The formula to convert pm to m is as follows:

  1 pm=1012 m

Thus, 270 pm is converted to m as follows:

  Diameter=(270 pm)(1012 m1 pm)=270×1012 m

The formula to calculate pressure is as follows:

  P=RT(π2)d2NAl        (2)

Substitute 8.3145 J/molK for R, 293 K for T , 270×1012 m for d, 6.022×1023 mol1 for NA and 106 m for l in equation (2) evaluate pressure.

  P=(8.3145 J/molK)(293 K)(4.43996)(270×1012 m)2(6.022×1023 mol1)(106)=0.01249845×106 =12498.4 J/m3

Substitute 8.3145 J/molK for R , 293 K for T , 270×1012 m for d, 6.022×1023 mol1 for NA and 103 m for l in equation (2) evaluate pressure.

  P=(8.3145 J/molK)(293 K)(4.43996)(270×1012 m)2(6.022×1023 mol1)(103)=0.01249845×103 =12.4984 J/m3

Substitute 8.3145 J/molK for R , 293 K for T , 270×1012 m for d, 6.022×1023 mol1 for NA and 1 m for l in equation (2) evaluate pressure.

  P=(8.3145 J/molK)(293 K)(4.43996)(270×1012 m)2(6.022×1023 mol1)(1)=0.01249845×1 =0.01249845 J/m3
