CP Exploring Europa. There is strong evidence that Europa, a satellite of Jupiter, has a liquid ocean beneath its icy surface. Many scientists think we should land a vehicle there to search for life. Before launching it, we would want to test such a lander under the gravity conditions at the surface of Europa. One way to do this is to put the lander at the end of a rotating arm in an orbiting earth satellite. If the arm is 4.25 m long and pivots about one end, at what angular speed (in rpm) should it spin so that the acceleration of the lander is the same as the acceleration due to gravity at the surface of Europa? The mass of Europa is 14.80 × 1022 kg and its diameter is 3120 km.

- Neptune has a mass of 1.01026kg and is 4.5109km from the Sun with an orbital period of 165 years. Planetesimals in the outer primordial solar system 4.5 billion years ago coalesced into Neptune over hundreds of millions of years. If the primordial disk that evolved into our present day solar system had a radius of 1011km and if the matter that made up these planetesimals that later became Neptune was spread out evenly on the edges of it, what was the orbital period of the outer edges of the primordial disk?arrow_forwardNeptune has a mass of 1.0 ✕ 1026 kg and is 4.5 ✕ 109 km from the Sun with an orbital period of 165 years. - A number of gas giant planets orbiting other stars at distances less than 1 A.U. have been discovered. Because of their proximity to their parent stars, and their compositional similarity to Jupiter, they have been labeled “Hot Jupiters”. The orbital radius of one of these planets is 0.06 A.U. with average orbital speed 600 km/sec. What is the length of this planet’s year in Earth (solar) days? Estimate the mass, M, of its parent star in terms of the mass of the sun (M) using Newton’s first form of Kepler’s 3rd Law. Calculate the star’s luminosity, L, in terms of the luminosity of the sun (L☉), Note: (LL=MM4where L ~ 4 × 1026 W ). The radius of this planet is 1.5 times the radius of Jupiter. Assuming its equilibrium temperature is the temperature at which the planet radiates as much energy as it receives from its star, estimate the temperature of the planet. The value of the planet’s albedo is 0.8. - S S You have one LAST attemp You are observing an exoplanet (a planet orbiting a star other than our Sun). Like many of the earliest exoplanets that were discovered, the planet is a "hot Jupiter", a gas giant that orbits its star closer than Earth orbits our Sun. You can assume the mass of the planet is much smaller than the mass of the star and can be neglected.
