Concept introduction:
A silent mutation is a mutation that changes DNA but not an amino acid. When eukaryotic DNA is transcribed, nascent mRNA has sequences that code for amino acids, which are called exons, as well as other sequences that are noncoding called introns. With the help of exonic splicing enhancers, mRNA undergoes normal splicing. When an exon is missed and spliced, it is referred to as exon skipping.
