Chapter 12, Problem 12RQ
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The example of monosynaptic reflex.

Introduction:

Monosynaptic reflex is one of the simplest reflexes where only one synapse is formed between the sensory and motor neurons and there are no interneurons between them. Polysynaptic reflexes involve more than one synapse and interneurons.

Correct answer:

Serial processing.

Explanation for the correct answer:

Option (c) is given as serial processing. The neurons that form one synapse and are said to be joined in series and the processing is called serial processing. In this pathway, the neurons pass the signals along a single path from one neuron to another in the form of a chain. Hence, option (c) is correct.

Explanation for the incorrect answer:

Option (a) is given as a convergent circuit. As monosynaptic reflex has no interneurons in between the sensory and the motor neuron, there does not occur an amalgamate of many neurons into a single neuron. So, it is an incorrect option.

Option (b) is given as parallel processing. Information from a single neuron is sent along two or more parallel pathways known as parallel processing. It occurs when a single sensory stimulus results in multiple perceptions. So, it is an incorrect option.

Option (d) is given as a reverberating circuit. When one neuron in the circuit receives feedback from another neuron in the same circuit, it is known as a reverberating circuit. So, it is an incorrect option.

Hence, options (a), (b), and (d) are incorrect.
