Concept Introduction:
Cost Volume Profit (CVP) Analysis:
The Cost Volume Profit analysis is the analysis of the relation between cost, volume, and profit of a product. It analyzes the cost and profits at the different level of production, in order to determine the breakeven point and required the level of sales to earn the desired profit.
Contribution margin means the margin that is left with the company after recovering variable cost out of revenue earned by selling smart phones.
The formula for contribution margin is as follows:
Contribution margin = Sales - Variable cost.
Similarly contribution margin ratio = Contribution/sales
To Calculate:
The Cost amount per unit, the markup %, and the selling price per unit

- Product pricing using the cost-plus approach methods; differential analysis for accepting additional business Crystal Displays Inc. recently began production of a new product, flat panel displays, which required the investment of 1,500,000 in assets. The costs of producing and selling 5,000 units of flat panel displays are estimated as follows: Crystal Displays Inc. is currently considering establishing a selling price for flat panel displays. The president of Crystal Displays has decided to use the cost-plus approach to product pricing and has indicated that the displays must earn a 15% return on invested assets. Instructions 1. Determine the amount of desired profit from the production and sale of flat panel displays. 2. Assuming that the product cost method is used, determine (A) the cost amount per unit, (B) the markup percentage, and (C) the selling price of flat panel displays. 3. (Appendix) Assuming that the total cost method is used, determine (A) the cost amount per unit, (B) the markup percentage (rounded to two decimal places), and (C) the selling price of flat panel displays. (Round markup to nearest whole dollar.) 4. (Appendix) Assuming that the variable cost method is used, determine (A) the cost amount per unit, (B) the markup percentage (rounded to two decimal places), and (C) the selling price of flat panel displays. (Round markup to nearest whole dollar.) 5. Comment on any additional considerations that could influence establishing the selling price for flat panel displays. 6. Assume that as of August 1, 3,000 units of flat panel displays have been produced and sold during the current year. Analysis of the domestic market indicates that 2,000 additional units are expected to be sold during the remainder of the year at the normal product price determined under the product cost method. On August 3, Crystal Displays Inc. received an offer from Maple Leaf Visual Inc. for 800 units of flat panel displays at 225 each. Maple Leaf Visual Inc. will market the units in Canada under its own brand name, and no variable selling and administrative expenses associated with the sale will be incurred by Crystal Displays Inc. The additional business is not expected to affect the domestic sales of flat panel displays, and the additional units could be produced using existing factory, selling, and administrative capacity. A. Prepare a differential analysis of the proposed sale to Maple Leaf Visual Inc. B. Based on the differential analysis in part (A), should the proposal be accepted?arrow_forwardNeed help with these financial accounting questionarrow_forwardSouthland Corporation’s decision to produce a new line of recreational products resulted in the need to construct either a small plant or a large plant. The best selection of plant size depends on how the marketplace reacts to the new product line. To conduct an analysis, marketing management has decided to view the possible long-run demand as low, medium, or high. The following payoff table shows the projected profit in millions of dollars: What is the decision to be made, and what is the chance event for Southland’s problem? Construct a decision tree. - Den-Tex Company is evaluating a proposal to replace its HID (high intensity discharge) lighting with LED (light emitting diode) lighting throughout its warehouse. LED lighting consumes less power and lasts longer than HID lighting for similar performance. The following information was developed: a. Determine the investment cost for replacing the 700 fixtures. b. Determine the annual utility cost savings from employing the new energy solution. c. Should the proposal be accepted? Evaluate the proposal using net present value, assuming a 15-year life and 8% minimum rate of return. (Present value factors are available in Appendix A.)arrow_forwardDifferential analysis involving opportunity costs On August 1, Rantoul Stores Inc. is considering leasing a building and purchasing the necessary equipment to operate a retail store. Alternatively, the company could use the funds to invest in 1,000,000 of 4% U.S. Treasury bonds that mature in 15 years. The bonds could be purchased at face value. The following data have been assembled: Instructions 1. Prepare a differential analysis as of August 1 presenting the proposed operation of the store for the 15 years (Alternative 1) as compared with investing in U.S. Treasury bonds (Alternative 2). 2. Based on the results disclosed by the differential analysis, should the proposal be accepted? 3. If the proposal is accepted, what would be the total estimated operating income of the store for the 15 years?arrow_forwardPlease do not give solution in image format thankuarrow_forward
- Please don't use hand rating and correct answerarrow_forwardCalculate selling price of new product; what-if questions; breakeven D&RCorp. has annual revenues of $275,000, an average contribution margin ratio of 34%, and fixed expenses of $100,000.Required:a. Management is considering adding a new product to the company’s product line. The new item will have $8.25 of variable costs per unit. Calculate the selling price that will be required if this product is not to affect the average contribution margin ratio.b. If the new product adds an additional $30,600 to D&R’s fixed expenses, how many units of the new product must be sold at the price calculated in part a to break even on the new product?c. If 20,000 units of the new product could be sold at a price of $13.75 perunit, and the company’s other business did not change, calculate D&R’s total operating income and average contribution margin ratio.d. Describe how the analysis of adding the new product would be complicated if it were to “steal” some volume from existing products.arrow_forwardAssume that a company uses the absorption costing approach to cost-plus pricing. It is considering the introduction of a new product. To determine a selling price, the company has gathered the following information: Number of units to be produced and sold each year 15,000 Unit product cost $ 35.50 Estimated annual selling and administrative expenses $ 63,900 Estimated investment required by the company $ 780,000 Desired return on investment (ROI) 12 % The selling price that the company would establish using a markup percentage on absorption cost is closest to: Multiple Choice $46.00. $41.80. $48.00. $50.00.arrow_forward
