Chapter 12, Problem 12.32E

Identifying and managing unused capacity (continuation of 12-29). Refer to Exercise 12-29.

  1. 1. Calculate the amount and cost of unused architectural support capacity at the beginning of 2017, based on the number of jobs actually done in 2017.

Required

  1. 2. Suppose Compton can add or reduce its architectural support capacity in increments of 10 units. What is the maximum amount of costs that Compton could save in 2017 by downsizing architectural support capacity?
  2. 3. Compton, in fact, does not eliminate any of its unused architectural support capacity. Why might Compton not downsize?

12-29 Strategy, balanced scorecard, service company. Compton Associates is an architectural firm that has been in practice only a few years. Because it is a relatively new firm, the market for the firm’s services is very competitive. To compete successfully, Compton must deliver quality services at a low cost. Compton presents the following data for 2016 and 2017.

  2016 2017
1. Number of jobs billed 40 50
2. Selling price per job $32,000 $30,000
3. Architect labor-hours 24,000 27,000
4. Cost per architect labor-hour $35 $36
5. Architect support capacity (number of jobs the firm can do) 60 60
6. Total cost of software-implementation support $168,000 $180,000
7. Software-implementation support-capacity cost per job (row 6 ÷ row 5) $2,800 $3,000

Architect labor-hour costs are variable costs. Architect support costs for each year depend on the Architect support capacity that Compton chooses to maintain each year (that is, the number of jobs it can do each year). Architect support costs do not vary with the actual number of jobs done that year.

  1. 1. Is Compton Associate’s strategy one of product differentiation or cost leadership? Explain briefly.

Required

  1. 2. Describe key measures you would include in Compton’s balanced scorecard and your reasons for doing so.

The Stimson Company (TSC) Case Study: TSC had about 130 employees with annual revenue of $15m in 2015. Their core business is the selling of dust control systems. Estimating project costs seems to be the main problem for Project 14321. You are to advise a reward mechanism for TSC management that will help with improving project cost estimation  Below points to be noted while answering: Budget revisions and budget adjustments The right balance between motivation/performance and target difficulty  Resource allocation issue as it relates to cost estimation
Two inventors recently organized as Innovation Inc., consult you regarding a planned new product. They have estimates of the cost of materials, labor, overhead, and other expenses for 2016 but need to know how much to charge for each unit to earn a profit in 2016 equal to 15% of their estimated total long-term investment of $600,000 (ignore income taxes).  Their plans indicate that each unit of the new product requires the following: Direct Material- 4lb of a material costing $7.50 per lb. Direct Labor- 2hrs. Of a metal former's time at $16.50 per hr. And 0.6 hr. Of an assemblers time at $12 per hr. Major items of production overhead would be annual rent of $69,690 for a factory building, $42,990 rent for machinery, and $32,550 of indirect material. Other production overhead is estimated to be $349,920. Selling expenses are an estimated 30% of total sales, and non-factory administrative expenses are 20% of total sales. The consensus at Innovation is that during 2016 10,000 units of…
B): As an engineering manager, suppose that the outputs of a company for the production of fire sensors amounted to 80,000 units in 2018, and that the value of the actual inputs to this company was 800,000 dinars, and the planned production for 2018 is 90,000 units. Required: Calculate the efficiency and effectiveness of this company for the year 2018, if you know that there is a production damage rate of 8%?
