Chapter 11, Problem 36E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The error in the argument that natural sources such as volcanoes add more chlorine to the stratosphere is to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

Ozone is a component of photochemical smog and is formed by the action of sunlight. Ozone in the troposphere is polluted, but in the stratosphere, it is a natural and essential part of our atmosphere. HCFCs and CFCs are a class of inert compounds of carbon, chlorine, and fluorine. They are quite useful for many applications. But the inertness of HCFCs has an environmental effect because of the presence of chlorine. However, due to the presence of hydrogen, they are more reactive and less environmentally degrading than CFCs.

Students have asked these similar questions
Explain the role of ozone gas in troposphere and stratosphere. What do you understand by ozone layer depletion? Explain the causes and solution of ozone layer depletion.
what properties of CFC's make them ideal for various commercial application but also make them a long-term problem in the stratosphere?
Write the two reactions that contribute most significantly to ozone destruction in the stratosphere (non-catalyzed reactions).
