Question
Chapter 11, Problem 32E
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
HCFCs and their effects on the ozone layer are to be described.
Concept Introduction:
HCFCs and CFCs are a class of inert compounds of carbon, chlorine, and fluorine. They are quite useful for many applications. But the inertness of HCFCs has an environmental effect because of the presence of chlorine, causing ozone-layer depletion. However, due to the presence of hydrogen, they are more reactive and less environmentally degrading than CFCs.

Is it possible to create ozone with the technology we have today?
As of the writing of this text, EPA standards limit atmospheric ozone levels in urban environments to 84 ppb. How many moles of ozone would there be in the air above Los Angeles County (an area about 4000 square miles; consider a height of 100 m above the ground) if ozone was at this concentration?
