Concept Introduction:
Different mechanisms and different rate of reactions are responsible for contrasting level of ozone concentrations in troposphere and stratosphere.
Answer to Problem 1CO
Ozone and other pollutants form in the troposphere due to different rate of reactions involved.
Explanation of Solution
Ozone also formed at ground level but the mechanism and kinetics are very different from that in upper atmosphere. The formation of ozone in smog comprises several steps. The oxide of nitrogen
When NO2 absorbs sunlight, it dissociates to:
The oxygen atom generated by this reaction can now form ozone:
Thus, formed ozone will quickly react with NO:
This reaction is much faster so ozone is unlikely to form if no other compound reacts with NO to consume it and make it unavailable for dissociation of ozone. The chemical which can consume NO are volatile organic compounds (VOC). Most of the VOC’s are industrial solvents.
The reactions to remove NO are much faster than the reaction of NO with O3. Thus, in the presence of sunlight smog can form along with ozone.
Ozone is also a pollutant at concentrations higher than 1 ppm along with other oxides of nitrogen and sulphur.

- Substances that poison a catalyst pose a major concern for many engineering designs, including those for catalytic converters. One design option is to add materials that react with potential poisons before they reach the catalyst. Among the commonly encountered catalyst poisons are silicon and phosphorus, which typically form phosphate or silicate ions in the oxidizing environment of an engine. Group 2 elements are added to the catalyst to react with these contaminants before they reach the working portion of the catalytic converter. If estimates show that a catalytic converter will be exposed to 625 g of silicon during its lifetime, what mass of beryllium would need to be included in the design?arrow_forwardGive practical applications of chemical kinetics-related concepts in real life.arrow_forwardWhat are practical applications of chemical kinetics-related concepts in real life?arrow_forward
- Use the kinetic theory to justify the following observations: (a) the rate of a reaction in the gas phase depends on the energy with which two molecules collide, which in turn depends on their speeds; (b) in the Earth’s atmosphere, light gases, such as H2 and He, are rare but heavier gases, such as O2, CO2, and N2, are abundant.arrow_forwardExplain the significance of the slope and intercept of an Arrhenius plot.arrow_forwardEnumerate at least five real-life of the collision theory of chemical kineticsarrow_forward
