Chapter 10.7, Problem 75E

A study of hospitalized patients who develop pneumonia reported that 1 in 5 (20%) are readmitted to the hospital within 30 days after discharge (“Comparison of Therapist-Directed and Physician Directed Respiratory Care in COPD Subjects with Acute Pneumonia,” Respiratory Care [2015]: 151–154).

The study reported that 15 out of n = 162 hospital patients who had been treated for pneumonia using a respiratory therapist protocol were readmitted to the hospital within 30 days after discharge. These data can be used to decide if the proportion readmitted is less than 0.20.

  1. a. What hypotheses should be tested?
  2. b. Discuss whether the conditions necessary for a large-sample hypothesis test for one proportion are satisfied.
  3. c. The exact binomial test can be used even in cases when the sample size condition for the large-sample test is met. Use the output at the bottom of the page from the Shiny app “Exact Binomial Test for One Proportion” to carry out an exact binomial test for one proportion, using the null hypothesis that the population proportion of subjects who will be readmitted to a hospital within 30 days after following a respiratory therapist protocol for treatment of pneumonia is equal to 1/5 = 0.2.

  1. d. Calculate the P-value for the same hypotheses using the large-sample approach for testing one population proportion. Compare this P-value to the P-value obtained in Part (b). Would the same conclusion be reached in either case? Explain.

A diabetic nurse seeks to assess the prevalence of type 2 diabetes among women in a population (age 18 to 80 years). She conveniently sampled 100 women attending antenatal care and asked them whether they had hypertension. Of the 100 pregnant women sampled, 50 consented to take part in the study and 1 had diabetes. Based on this finding, the nurse concluded that “the prevalence of diabetes among women in the population is low (2%).”   A) Do you agree with the conclusion made by the diabetic nurse? Justify in not more than 100 words?   B) Would you have conducted such a study differently if you had all the resources at hand (Describe in not more than 75 words).
Colonoscopy is a medical procedure that is designed to find and remove precancerous lesions in the colon before they become cancerous. The article “Association of Colonoscopy and Death from Colorectal Cancer” (N. Baxter, M. Goldwasser, et al., Annals of Internal Medicine, 2009:1–8) reports that in a sample of 10,292 people diagnosed with colorectal cancer, 7.0% had previously had a colonoscopy, and in a sample of 51,460 people without colorectal cancer, 9.8% had previously had a colonoscopy. Can you conclude that the percentage of people who have had colonoscopies is greater in those without colorectal cancer?
A pathological video game user (PVGU) is a video game user that averages 31 or more hours a week of gameplay. According to the article “Pathological Video Game Use among Youths: A Two-Year Longitudinal Study” (Pediatrics, Vol. 127, No. 2, pp. 319–329) by D. Gentile et al., in 2011, about 9% of children in grades 3–8 were PVGUs. Suppose that, today, five youths in grades 3–8 are randomly selected. Let X represent the number of youths who are PVGUs. n =  p =  1 – p =  Prepare the probability distribution for the random variable X. Complete the following table. Round your answers to 4 decimal places e.g. 0.XXXX or .XXXX. X = x P(X=x) 0   1   2   3   4   5     ∑=1.0000∑=1.0000  Calculate the probability that EXACTLY three youths are PVGUs. Round your answers to 4 decimal places e.g. 0.XXXX or .XXXX. P(X = 3) =  Calculate the probability that AT LEAST two youths are PVGUs. Round your answers to 4 decimal places e.g. 0.XXXX or .XXXX. P(X ≥ 2) =  Calculate the…
