Question
Chapter 10.5, Problem 10CYU
Summary Introduction
To review:
The primary function of the muscles is to facilitate movement. Determine the additional function of numerous muscles that cross the knee.
Introduction:
There are different types of muscles associated with the hips and the knee. Some of the muscles act specifically at the hip joint and some act only at the knee. There are few muscles, which have an association with the hip joint as well as the knee joint.

Movement in the skeletal muscles in the body is affected by physiological mechanisms known as levers. There are three parts of levers known as the effort, fulcrum, and load. Please explain how levers, along with its parts allow the arm to move.
Skeletal muscles can only produce a mechanical force as they are contracted, but a leg flexes and extends while walking. How can muscles perform this task?
Imagine you are observing somebody rotating their ankles in a circular motion, using common terms, describe the muscles you think are involved in this movement, what role do you think each of the muscles play?

- Explain, structurally, why pennate muscles tend to be very powerful. What aspect of muscular function do they typically sacrifice to achieve this power of contraction?arrow_forwardIn my study guide, I have been going through notes and I am unsure of the topic on muscle arrangements. The main concept from the chapter on the study guide states "Describe the way that muscles are arranged in groups with complementary actions at a joint." So, how are the muscles are arranged by groups?arrow_forwardMuscles work in groups when they perform multifaceted movements. Write the anatomical term that describes the muscle of a compartment that performs the following action. 1. M uscle that is opposing an action 2. Muscle that stabilizes the origin of a prime mover 3. Small muscle that aids prime mover 4. Prime mover. Muscle that is causing an actionarrow_forward
- 1) Describe the different criteria that contribute to how skeletal muscles are named. For example you can use the names of the muscles below to predict their location, action or appearance: Abdominal external oblique, Trapezius, Flexor carpi ulnaris, Gastrocnemius 2) Describe the muscles of the anterior abdominal wall. 3) Why are the muscles of the face different from typical skeletal muscle?arrow_forwardLocate and list two different pairs of muscles that act as on the body as agonist/antagonist. (That is, in each pair, one muscle will produce a movement, such as flexion, that the other muscle will undo, and produce extension; abduction/adduction, etc. are other ways that muscle produce opposite actions on the same part of the body).Name two muscles that act as “fixators.” (What are fixators?) What joint or joints are they helping to stabilize? Why is the biceps brachii called a “bicep,” while the triceps brachii is called a “triceps?”What is the difference between a muscle with “longus” as part of its name and a muscle with “brevis” as a part of its name?arrow_forwardThis muscle is the major “antagonist” of the muscles that flex the forearm. (What is an “antagonist?”)This muscle affects the scapula, and would be involved with “shrugging” the shoulders (shrugging the shoulders is lifting them up in an “I don’t know…” posture). This muscle could bring the arm downward in a power stroke, as if to strike a blow.arrow_forward
- What is the name for a muscle that turns a limb to face downwards?arrow_forwardChao-Jung abducted her thigh very strongly while riding a horse and pulled some groin muscles in her medial upper thigh. What muscles did she probably strain, and what is the medical name for her condition? (Hint: See this chapter’s Related Clinical Terms.)arrow_forwardMost of the muscles of the skeleton are attached to areas very close to the joints, so their arms, although they are very small, their mechanisms allow the movement of the human body. - Why is it incorrect to talk about ‘flexing a muscle’?arrow_forwardChose two of the major muscles or muscle groups. Using correct terminology and with reference to insertion and origin points, describe how the muscle originates proximally and inserts distally to cause a movement at the joints that are crossed What types of movement does this create, and what are some actions that involve the use of these movements? Give another example of when the movement would be used during physical activity, sports and/or everyday life. (please help!!) If you could make it into a chart that would be helpful aswellarrow_forwardCoactivation of abdominal muscle and muscles supporting the spine has been shown to be essential for the bipedal posture of humans.Based on your data, is the coactivation of the triceps necessary for proper functioning of the biceps and vice versa?arrow_forward
