Answer to Problem 48P

The relative magnitudes of modulus of elasticity of steel to given materials are tabulated in Table 1.

Explanation of Solution

The values of modulus of elasticity for the given materials are taken from table 10.5 in the text book.

The modulus of elasticity of steel Esteel is 200 GPa.

Determining the average modulus of elasticity value for aluminum alloy is,

Average = 70+792=74.5

relative magnitude=Esteelaverage=20074.5=2.7

Determining the average modulus of elasticity value for copper alloy is,

Average = 110+1202=115

relative magnitude=Esteelaverage=200115=1.74

Determining the average modulus of elasticity for titanium alloy is,

Average = 100+1202=110

relative magnitude=Esteelaverage=200110=1.8

Determining the average modulus of elasticity for rubber is,

Average = 0.0007+0.0042=0.002

relative magnitude=Esteelaverage=2000.002=100,000

Determining the average modulus of elasticity for steel is,

Average = 190+2102=200

relative magnitude=Esteelaverage=200200=1

Determining the average modulus of elasticity for Douglas fir is,

Average = 11+132=12

relative magnitude=Esteelaverage=20012=16.7

Determining the average modulus of elasticity for oak is,

Average = 11+122=11.5

relative magnitude=Esteelaverage=20011.5=17.3

Determining the average modulus of elasticity for Southern Pine is,

Average = 11+142=12.5

relative magnitude=Esteelaverage=20012.5=16

Thus, the determined relative magnitudes of modulus of elasticity of steel to given materials are tabulated in table 1.

The Table 1 shows the material, modulus of elasticity, and the relative magnitudes of modulus of elasticity of steel.
