Chapter 10, Problem 22P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The compounds that are likely to be formed on free-radical addition of HBr to cis-2-pentene are to be determined and the stereochemically accurate formula for each of them is to be written, and the configuration at each chirality center is to be specified.

Concept introduction:

The number of stereoisomers formed can be calculated using the formula 2n, where n is the number of chiral centers present in the molecule.

The absolute configuration of the chiral center is determined on the basis of the following rules:

First priority of the four groups present on the carbon atoms is decided. Higher is the atomic number of the group, higher is its priority.

The compound undergoes rotation in order to get the least priority group above or below the plane.

If the least priority group is present below the plane, then clockwise arrangement of first three priority groups gives R configuration and anticlockwise gives S. Reverse is true if the least priority group is present above the plane.

Complete the following reaction by drawing a structural formula for the product. CH,CH, (1) NABH4 ? (2) H30* • You do not have to consider stereochemistry. • You do not have to explicitly draw H atoms.
12. Natural (2)-menthol, the essential oil primarily responsible for the flavor and aroma of peppermint, is the IR,25,5R-stereoisomer. (a) Identify (2)-menthol from the structures you drew for Problem 50, part (b). (b) Another of the naturally occurring diastereomers of menthol is (1)-isomenthol, the 1S 2R5R- stereoisomer. Identify (1)-isomenthol among your structures. (c) A third is (1)-neomenthol, the 15.25,SR-compound. Find (1)-neomenthol among your structures. (d) Based on your understanding of the conformations of substituted cyclohexanes (Section 4-4), what is the stability order (from most stable to least) for the three diastereomers, menthol, isomenthol, and neomenthol?
The synthesis of carbohydrates can be particularly difficult because of the large number of chiral centers and OH functional groups present. Epoxides can be useful synthetic intermediates in carbohydrate synthesis. Draw the product of the reaction of a phenyl Gilman reagent with this epoxide. QA O • Use the wedge/hash bond tools to indicate stereochemistry where it exists. • Explicitly define the cis/trans stereochemistry of fused rings using wedge or hash bonds. • If enantiomers are formed, draw both. • Separate multiple products using the + sign from the drop-down menu.
