Chapter 10, Problem 1QP
To determine

The sequence of steps that lead to the convection in the atmosphere of the giant planets.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 1QP

The sequence of steps is (c), (f), (e), (b) and (d).

Explanation of Solution

Convection is the process in which heat is transferred to the surroundings. In this process, hot air expands and rises whereas cool air falls and displaces the hot air. The hot sir then loses its heat energy by transferring it to the cool surrounding which then falls and heat up at the contact of warm surface.

Gravitational attraction of the planets pulls the particles towards its center. As they fall towards the centre, they acquire kinetic energy which is then converted into thermal energy due to friction. This thermal energy heats the surrounding. Warm gas expands which then cools.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the sequence of steps is (c), (f), (e), (b) and (d).
