Prescribed fire is an important tool for foresters. A recent article describes how decision analysis is used to decide when, where and what to burn. In one example, a number of areas in the Tahoe National Forest in California had been logged and were being prepared for replanting. Preparation included prescribed burning, and two possible treatments were available: burning the slash as it lay on the ground, or “yarding of and merchantable material” (YUM) prior to burning. The latter treatment involves using heavy equipment to pile the slash. YUM reduces the difficulty of controlling the burn but costs an additional $100 per acre. In deciding between the two treatments two uncertainties were considered critical. The first was how the fire would behave under each scenario. For example, the buyer could be fully successful, problems could arise which could be controlled eventually, or the fire could escape entailing considerable losses. Second if problems developed, they could result in…
The following scenario list comprises two different teachers and the marking system each employs. List the advantages and disadvantages of each. Also, identify the approximate weights that you believe should be placed on each part of each system.
Mr. Williams is a sixth-grade teacher who is known as a strict grader. 100% of a student’s grades is based upon his or her weekly classroom tests, with only one exception: the student who improves the most in each subject during the grading period automatically receives an “A” for that subject.
Ms. Wallace believes that every grade should reflect precisely what a student does or does not know. Therefore, her testing strategy is to administer criterion-referenced tests exclusively, in which the grade given reflects the number and type of concepts mastered. She then uses these grades to provide either remedial or advanced work to those who need it.
A real estate investor has the opportunity to purchase land currently zoned residential. If the county board approves a request to rezone the property as commercial within the next year, the investor will be able to lease the land to a large discount firm that wants to open a new store on the property. However, if the zoning change is not approved, the investor will have to sell the property at a loss. Profits (in thousands of dollars) are shown in the following payoff table:

- Mont Corp produces and sells 1,000 dining tables per year. Currently its only quality problem with the products is related to varnishing. It currently incurs $400 per year for quality training and $600 per year for reliability engineering. Inspection cost is $6 per unit, and all units produced are inspected. Traditionally, at an internal inspection, 9% of all units fully-produced are found to have problems with the varnishing, and are reworked. Rework cost is $100 per unit. Defective units sold to customers are returned to the company and reworked. External failures are 1% of units sold, and the company incurs the shipping costs at the rate of $20 per unit. In 2020, management are considering an alternative method of inspecting products which will reduce inspection cost by $1.50 per unit. The alternative method will reduce the internal failure to 4% of all units produced, and increase the external failure rate to 6% of all units sold. In addition, with the alternative inspection…arrow_forwardYou have two design options for your new line of high-resolution monitors for Computer-Aided Design (CAD)workstations. The production run is for 110,000 units. Design option A has a .90 probability of yielding 65good monitors per 100 and a .10 probability of yielding 70good monitors per 100. This design will cost $1,000,000. Design option B has a .80 probability of yielding 65good units per 100 and a .20 probability of yielding 60good units per 100. This design will cost $1,350,000. Good or bad, each monitor will cost $75. Each good monitor will sell for $150. Bad monitors are destroyed and have no salvage value. We ignore any disposal costs in this problem. Demonstrate how decision trees can be used in order to choose the design option based on the above situation. Calculate the expected monetary value (EMV) of each option and determine which option you will propose.arrow_forwardResidents of Mill River have fond memories of ice skating at a local park. An artist has captured the experience in a drawing and is hoping to reproduce it and sell framed copies to current and former residents. He thinks that if the market is good he can sell 400 copies of the elegant version at $125 each. If the market is not good, he will sell only 300 at $90 each. He can make a deluxe version of the same drawing instead. He feels that if the market is good he can sell 500 copies of the deluxe version at $100 each. If the market is not good, he will sell only 400 copies at $70 each. In either case, production costs will be approximately $35,000. He can also choose to do nothing, if he believes there is a 50% probability of a good market, what should he do and why?arrow_forward

The forecast for the CRTs is 100,000 units annually. The company will make 100,000 units using one of the two designs at a cost of $75 each. Good CRTs can be sold, but bad CRTs are destroyed and have no salvage value. (Ignore any disposal cost issues for the moment.) The company can sell good CRTs for $150. Design option A has a .90 probability of yielding 59 good CRTs per 100 and a .10 probability of yielding 64 good CRTs per 100. The design will cost $1,000,000. Design option B has a .80 probability of yielding 64 good CRTs per 100 and a .20 probability of yielding 59 good CRTs per 100. The design will cost $1,350,000. Draw and label the decision tree (for two design options with two possible yields each). Calculate the first-year payoff for each option. The result? No other airline in the industry's history has enjoyed the customer loyalty and extended profitability for which Southwest is now famous. The company now flies more than 3,400 times each day to over 64 destinations across the United States There's more to the story, however, than making promises and hoping to fulfill them. A large part of Southwest Airlines' success lies in its ability to plan long-term capacity to better match demand, as also improving the utilization of its fleet by turning around an aircraft at the gate faster than its competitors. Capacity at Southwest is measured in seat miles, and even a single minute reduction in aircraft turnaround time system wide means…arrow_forward
