Step 1: Introduction:
Drosophila flies exhibit the XX and XY type of sex-determination.
In this type of sex determination, the females have two X chromsomes and males have one X and one Y chromsomes in their genotype.
As the males have only one X chromosome (as the males do not have another homologous X chromosome), whatever the allele on X chromosome, irrespective of its condition (it may be either dominant or recessive), it can be expressed.
In the case of females, the expression is depends. The presence of at least one dominant allele at the locus gives the dominant phenotype. The recessive phenotype will be expressed if both X chromosomes have recessive alleles at the same locus.

The expected phenotypic ratio of the progeny of a SsYyx ssyy test cross is: A. 9:3:3:1 B. 3:1 C. 1:1:1:1 D. 1:2:1 E. 3:1:1:3arrow_forwardPROBLEM SET #1;: The parental genotypes for a series of crosses are wild-type male fruit flies mated to females with white eyes (wh) and miniature (min) wings. The phenotypes of the F1 generation were wild-type females, and males with white eyes, and miniature wings. These flies were allowed to mate with each other and produced the following offspring: Red eyes, long wings White eyes, miniature wings Red eyes, miniature wings White eyes, long wings 770 716 401 318 Total 2205 A. Are these genes linked? Why or why not? Your answer should diagram a cross to support your decision. *arrow_forwardProblem 5. The eye color of fruit flies is an X-linked trait. The red eye color is dominant and the white eye color is recessive. If a white-eyed male fly mates with a heterozygous red-eyed female fly, what will be the genotypes and phenotypes of their offspring? a) Construct a Punnett Square - List gametes in the area with the dashed line and the genotypes of the offspring in the area with the sold line. b) Genotypes of Offspring- c) Phenotypes of Offspring-arrow_forward
