Recrystallization
A student was tasked with purifying acetanilide (melting temperature of 114 - 116 °C)
from a mixture in lab. The original mixture contained 22% sand, as well as an unknown
amount of other impurities. The initial mass of their mixture was 0.543 g. The student
chose water as their recrystallization solvent, and dissolved their sample in 10.5 mL of
boiling water. They added 0.055 g of activated charcoal to their solution and boiled it for
5 minutes. They then filtered their hot solution, removing the charcoal, and allowed the
filtrate to cool on ice for 10 minutes during which they observed recrystallization in their
flask. They isolated this solid via vacuum filtration and fuily dried their product.
Afterwards, they found they had recovered 0.256 grams of product, and determined the
melting temperature of their product to be 108 - 112 °C.
Calculate the % recovery for this students' procedure. Was their final product pure? How
do you know?
