Question

How to estimate serum sialic acid can you provide method protocol for sialic acid estimation?

Expert Solution
Background

Sialic acids are derivatives of neuramic acid, which is a nine-carbon sugar. These are present as terminal sugars in glycolipids and glycoprotein, many of which are important for cell membrane formation. The most common among these is N-acetylneuraminic acid. However, elevated levels of sialic acid in serum is considered an indicator of disorders such as diabetes, renal disease, inflammation, bacterial infections, and disorders of the central nervous system.
