Problem 13-22 (Algo) Special Order Decisions [LO13-4]
Polaski Company manufactures and sells a single product called a Ret. Operating at capacity, the company can produce and sell 44,000 Rets per year. Costs associated with this level of production and sales are given below:
Unit | Total | ||||||
Direct materials | $ | 15 | $ | 660,000
Direct labor | 10 | 440,000
Variable manufacturing |
3 | 132,000 | |||||
Fixed manufacturing overhead | 9 | 396,000
Variable selling expense | 4 | 176,000
Fixed selling expense | 6 | 264,000
Total cost | $ | 47 | $ | 2,068,000
The Rets normally sell for $52 each. Fixed manufacturing overhead is $396,000 per year within the range of 36,000 through 44,000 Rets per year.
Required:
1. Assume that due to a recession, Polaski Company expects to sell only 36,000 Rets through regular channels next year. A large retail chain has offered to purchase 8,000 Rets if Polaski is willing to accept a 16% discount off the regular price. There would be no sales commissions on this order; thus, variable selling expenses would be slashed by 75%. However, Polaski Company would have to purchase a special machine to engrave the retail chain’s name on the 8,000 units. This machine would cost $16,000. Polaski Company has no assurance that the retail chain will purchase additional units in the future. What is the financial advantage (disadvantage) of accepting the special order? (Round your intermediate calculations to 2 decimal places.)
2. Refer to the original data. Assume again that Polaski Company expects to sell only 36,000 Rets through regular channels next year. The U.S. Army would like to make a one-time-only purchase of 8,000 Rets. The Army would reimburse Polaski for all of the variable and fixed production costs assigned to the units by the company’s absorption costing system, plus it would pay an additional fee of $1.60 per unit. Because the army would pick up the Rets with its own trucks, there would be no variable selling expenses associated with this order. What is the financial advantage (disadvantage) of accepting the U.S. Army's special order?
3. Assume the same situation as described in (2) above, except that the company expects to sell 44,000 Rets through regular channels next year. Thus, accepting the U.S. Army’s order would require giving up regular sales of 8,000 Rets. Given this new information, what is the financial advantage (disadvantage) of accepting the U.S. Army's special order?

Sardi Incorporated is considering whether to continue to make a component or to buy it from an outside supplier. The company uses 17,000 of the components each year. The unit product cost of the component according to the company's cost accounting system is given as follows: Direct materials Direct labor Variable manufacturing overhead Fixed manufacturing overhead Unit product cost Assume that direct labor is a variable cost. Of the fixed manufacturing overhead, 70% is avoidable if the component were bought from the outside supplier. In addition, making the component uses 2 minutes on the machine that is the company's current constraint. If the component were bought, time would be freed up for use on another product that requires 4 minutes on this machine and that has a contribution margin of $7.00 per unit. When deciding whether to make or buy the component, what cost of making the component should be…arrow_forward
- Problem 11-75 (Algo) Joint Cost Allocation and Product Profitability (LO 11-7, 8, 9) Prescott Lumber processes logs into grade A and grade B lumber. Logs cost $17,200 per load. The milling process produces 5,000 units of grade A with a market value of $100,800, and 20,000 units of grade B with a market value of 514,400. The cost of the milling process is $22,000 per load. Required: a. If the costs of the logs and the milling process are allocated on the basis of units of output what cost will be assigned to each product? b. If the costs of the logs and the milling process are allocated on the basis of the net realizable value, what cost will be assigned to each product? c-1. How much profit or loss does the grade B lumber provide using the data in this problem and your analysis in requirement (a)? c-2. Is it really possible to determine which product is more profitable? Normally, 38,000 units are sold each year. Variable unit cost data on the assembly are as follows: Direct material $10 Direct labor 8 Variable manufacturing overhead 4 The company is now using only 70% of its normal capacity; it could fully use its normal capacity by processing the assembly further and selling it for $51 per unit. If the company does this, material and labor costs will each increase by $2 per unit and variable overhead will go up by $1 per unit. Fixed costs will increase from the current level of $160,000 to $225,000. Prepare an analysis showing whether Jensen should process the assemblies further.Use a negative sign with answer to only indicate a loss from processing assemblies further; otherwise do not use negative signs with your answers.
