HIV-1 Aspartate Protease is a retropepsin enzyme i.e., retroviral aspartyl protease enzyme. Besides being a general base, Aspartyl Protease is involved with the hydrolysis in retroviruses (HIV) and hydrolysis is essential for the life-cycle of HIV. This protease cleaves the polyproteins which are newly synthesized and cleaves at nine cleavage sites for the production of protein components of an HIV virion. HIV Virion is the infectious form of this virus, without HIV Protease, HIV virion is uninfectious.
