WOOSTER — A dozen people have expressed interest in being appointed to replace the late Jim Carmichael, a Wayne County commissioner who died in office, on the November general election ballot.
The Republican Party Central Committee will gather Tuesday and among the agenda items will be scheduling a special meeting to address how it will do two things: Appoint someone to serve out Carmichael’s unexpired term, which runs through the end of the year, and certify a name to the Board of Elections to appear on the ballot in November. Carmichael died July 13 while serving in office.

However, she will participate in finding another candidate for the ballot because she is already on the November ballot.
In May 2015, Smail announced her intent to run for commissioner when Wiggam decided not to seek reelection and run for state representative. She defeated Bruce Wright in the March primary, and she will face Democrat Rodney Mackey, president of Apple Creek Village Council, in the November general election. Mackey was unopposed in the primary.
So far, only state Rep. Ron Amstutz, a Wooster Republican, has publicly expressed interest. He issued a press release Thursday. Because of term limits, he cannot run again for the Ohio House of Representatives, where he serves as speaker pro tem.
Including Amstutz, there have been 12 people who have contacted Smail expressing interest. Smail did not release any of the names. Some have told her they would be interested unless Amstutz run, but none has sent a formal letter of intent.
Even though no Democrat ran in the primary for the county commissioner seat occupied by Carmichael, the Wayne County Democratic Party will have an opportunity to name a candidate on the November ballot,
