Why WMS should make Super Crayons by Matthew Schrieffer
As more materials are created, more materials get thrown away and more goes to landfills and incinerators. It’s important to use the Three R’s (Reduce,Reuse,Recycle) to help the earth and we can do this besides recycling paper, plastic and metal. The waste we have is taken in three paths landfills, incinerators and recycling, however despite the recycling is good message we are getting only 33% of all waste in America is recycled and a 55% is buried in landfills and 12.5% is incinerated but that creates harmful chemical and landfills do not break down easily. Landfills increase every year do to more thrash, the average American discards 4/5th of a ton of trash each year. However WMS can help by making Super Crayons.

These Crayons can be in many different shapes, and these Crayons require some carving skill. The Super Crayon Kid’s Organization was founded and made by a group of students from Gorrie Elementary School who wanted to help kids with special needs and disabilities. They got this idea from another organization called SCARCE. The organization also takes used Crock Pots, empty altoids containers, large silicone cookie molds as well as crayons.
Recycling pumpkins is a good idea they contain nutrients good for soil and that they are 90% water and breakdown easily. However not everyone has access to it and pumpkins are very seasonal when and they are seasonal around the late fall when people are getting ready for other holidays like Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas and they may not remember to recycle the
According to the first article, the writer states that the main goal is to reduce the country landfill over the next five years. The average American produces more than 4 pounds of trash each day, using specific trash cans will help organize the waste. The new plan is that each resident will have three trash cans: a green one for compost, a blue one for recyclable paper and plastic, and a black one for landfill. Not having to open a new landfill will save money and improve our enviroment at the same time.
We have all heard the saying reduce, reuse, and recycle from a very young age. But let’s face it, how many of us recycle? The world we live in is slowly filling up with the trash that we throw out every day. One day who knows, we might be living in our own trash and everywhere we look there will be trash. Is this a world where we all want to live in? If not, we need to take steps to prevent the buildup of trash in our landfills and even our oceans. Therefore, recycling needs to be encouraged because it reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, prevents pollution, conserves natural resources, and creates jobs.
The author explains the benefits of the art supplies, the environmental problems resulting from a large amount of crayon wax in landfills, and how donating the crayons will benefit the environment. This information provides general facts about crayon waste, which is helpful for my research because the problem our project is based on the negative effects of discarding crayons. The reason companies recycle crayons is because, “The wax from crayons is not biodegradable and will never break down, leaving a waxy sludge in our landfills for centuries to come” (“What We Do”, Paragraph 2). We will use this information to explain to others why it is a smart choice to give unused crayons to companies like Crayon
Do you ever wonder what happens when you dispose of a common item such as a water bottle, a cigarette or even a Barbie doll? Most people would assume that it will go straight to the trash and be destroyed for good. Not many are aware of the number of materials they are wasting every day and how most of these items do not end up in landfills but in our environment. Chris Jordan, a contemporary modern artist, surely brings us to the attention of how our world is drowning from our piles of garbage through his unique way of art - which is putting the world we live in into numbers. Most of his work is revolved around the statistical aspect of garbage that is collectively growing around the world, but he does this in an eye-opening manner. Jordan
You do not have to spend all night waiting in the neighborhood pumpkin patch to enjoy the wonderful fragrance of the Great Pumpkin. Sure, you can spend the night going from house to house hoping that your unlucky streak of receiving a bag full of rocks will end but why wait.
The third reason is people wont go to halloween. In their words thats the point of halloween. This shows its a traditionThat’s why stores sell candy.
In many North American cultures, a disfiguring practice has taken place for 65 years starting in 1951. We try to change the aesthetic looks look of these individuals only to end up with hundred of thousands of unique gourds getting taken from their home. They then get grotesquely mutilated and left out in the cold to die. This obviously creates major psychological traumas for unsuspecting pumpkins. However, with the proper care and psychological preparation, you can achieve the sight of a festive pumpkin to welcome all trick or treaters that come to your door, without the psychological damage.
43% of the plastic is wasted on a global scale by being disposed of in landfills where all it does it
Have you seen the Pixar film Wall-E? In the opening scene of Wall-E the camera goes over the mountains of garbage. According to the epa 254 million tons of trash is created and only 167 million tons are ending up in landfills. If we don't act upon recycling that's what our world will look like. Recycling is a sensible way to protect our future.
Many hundreds of years ago, European Celts believed that souls of the dead visited Earth on the last day of October. This belief spread to the Romans, and eventually to the region of the United States. Halloween was originally called Allhallowe’en, or the evening before All Hallows Day, a Catholic holiday that celebrated Saints. This name was eventually shortened to what we call it now, Halloween. The reasoning for some of the traditions we do on Halloween, like carving pumpkins came from a man named Jack. Jack’s behavior was too poor to get into heaven, or even hell, so he was deemed to walk the Earth with a lantern until judgement day. The Irish carved turnips to remind them to not behave as Jack did, but, since pumpkins were easier
Throughout this lesson students will be hands on and engaged with the material. Students will need to cooperate with one another in order to learn and expand their knowledge. When doing the experiments students will have to work together and consider each others opinions. During the informal assessment students will be working in groups and discussing what is happening to the crayon or granola bar. During this lesson students will have to cooperate with one another in order for the activities to run smoothly. Cooperation allows students to work with one another and consider others options and thoughts. While students work together they are able to help their peers and asks their peers questions if the material is confusing. Student interactions
Let's say you woke up this morning and had your breakfast of yogurt, in a plastic cup, and a breakfast bar, in a plastic wrapper. Then you throw the items away in the trashcan. After that, you decide to maybe tidy up your room and throw away some junk mail and other papers you longer need since you like for your room to be neat and tidy. This may have taken a max time of half an hour but this is enough time for over 850,000 trees to be cut in the world and 1500 tons of plastic to be thrown away in a landfill in the U.S. Unfortunately it will take over 50 years for a new tree to grow and up to 700 years for a single plastic bottle to decompose in a landfill. What is the solution, you may ask. Well, it is simple:
Visit any landfill in the United States, and you are sure to find items whose useful lives have not yet been exhausted, and materials that could be turned into other products. Wasted resources in our landfills take up space that is becoming increasingly limited, and also have a negative impact on the overall health of the planet. In 2013, a King County Waste Characterization study showed that 72 percent of what is thrown out can be recycled. Of that 72 percent, the largest
Like crimson coloured leaves, pumpkin spice lattes and rainy days, the quest to find the perfect pumpkin is a treasured fall ritual. Dippning temperatures and shorter days can only mean one thing. Halloween is just around the corner, and consequently it is time for the annual trek to the local pumpkin patch. This year I decided to don my gumboots and head to Southlands Heritage Farm.
