Imagine a world cluttered with trash, once beautiful beaches and parks now overflowing with garbage. Roads no longer driveable, air no longer clean. Masks will be worn, and disease is on the rise. Now, imagine if you could have prevented this. I believe recycling is the first step. As of 2006 America is in the lead for producing the most waste, producing 236 million tons annually. Not only are we producing the most waste but by 2100 scientists estimate the amount will triple which will have serious effects on the Earth. Both physical effects and fiscal which means public services and government budgets will be impacted. The world is full of people using everyday products made from plastics or styrofoam, from simple things like cups, forks and spoons to expensive electronics such as printers, phones, and TV’s. “About 300 million tons of plastic is produced globally each year”(Raising Awareness of Plastic Waste) and “more than 14 million tonnes of polystyrene(styrofoam) are produced every year around the world”(Now and forever: The Styrofoam dilemma). With these high amounts being produced each year it is easy to see why our oceans are now filled with these materials which end up damaging our earths ecosystem, marine life, and wild life. Out of the 300 million tons of plastic produced “only about 10 percent of that is recycled”(Raising Awareness of Plastic Waste) and out of the 14 million tons of styrofoam produced only “56 million pounds of styrofoam are recycled”(EPS (Styrofoam) Facts, Figures and Statistics) This means that the majority of plastics and styrofoam end up in landfills or our oceans changing our world for the worst one non-recycled item at a time. After reviewing two different Ted Talks, one about recycling plastic by Mike Biddle and one about recycling styrofoam by Ashton Cofer it has become more apparent to me that recycling plastics is extremely important and Mike Biddle has the solution.

Everyone has been told to do this, but I don’t think everyone sees the importance of recycling. Sure, a lot of people recycle, but there are a lot that don’t. Recycling has many benefits, but the major benefit is less destruction of forests. Again, the rising population calls for many products that are made from trees, mainly paper. Everybody in the world uses paper, whether it be in the form of books, pencils, toilet paper, towels, and even shoes. All these paper products, and more, are a direct result of deforestation, for the trees are taken down and turned into these products. Say you have a whole box of school papers that you don’t need anymore, and you want to throw them in the trash. Instead of throwing it in the trash, you should recycle it. When you recycle it, the paper goes to a factory, which adds other products to it, melts it down, and molds it into other products. Imagine you wake up in 20 years and all you see out your window is trash lining the streets and roads. This is what is going to happen if we don’t start recycling now. If we all start recycling now we will have beautiful streets and roads not full of trash. I picked this topic because it is a worldwide problem and I think this topic can be solved. I was very curious about this topic and I wanted to know more about recycling.These are some driving questions I had at the beginning of this project. Why don’t a lot of people recycle? What is the most recycled item? Where is recycling a very big problem in the world? How can more people be involved with recycling? How many people and animals get affected by recycling every year? My driving question was how can we as people create a better recycling society.

There are many ways people could start fixing the world's trash crises, we just have to start making the necessary contributions instead of being the lazy humans that we are. The simplest and most effective way of getting rid of the access trash that we built up is to recycle it, separate your garbage into plastics, paper, metal, and glass, and bring it to your local recycling plant. There they will take the trash and turn it back into the raw material that is used to make more products. They reuse the waste instead of adding it to the massive landfills. However this does bring up some issues. Recycling plants create their own greenhouse gases and use up energy, but is it far less energy than creating new. According to stanford, manufacturing recycled aluminum takes ninety five percent less energy to create that greating it new. That means that recycling is faster, so it takes less energy, therefore it creates less greenhouse pollution. So do your part and recycle.

People Need to Recycle In the United Sates, where the population is inflated every year. The amount of space for landfills decreases every day. The need for recycling should not be asked, it should just be done out of habit. Everyone in America needs to recycle, to help the lamdfill problem, help the environment, and help produce new products from recycled goods. In America there is about two-hundred and eight tons of residential and commercial trash generated a year, 4.3 pounds per person a day (Prichard 1A). It is nice to know that all of the materials that could have been reused are going back in the ground where they came from. We are often bombarded with news articles, tv commercials, and social media about how the destruction of the Earth is approaching at a pace faster than before. These are alternative facts. Trees are everywhere. It is difficult to go more than one hour without seeing a tree. However, self-proclaimed environmentalists get aggravated if you try to cut so much as a single tree without pledging to plant one hundred more!
