In Search of the Great Pumpkin
Like crimson coloured leaves, pumpkin spice lattes and rainy days, the quest to find the perfect pumpkin is a treasured fall ritual. Dippning temperatures and shorter days can only mean one thing. Halloween is just around the corner, and consequently it is time for the annual trek to the local pumpkin patch. This year I decided to don my gumboots and head to Southlands Heritage Farm.
Naturally, I had an image in mind of the pumpkin I was seeking and was excited to carve out some fun. After all, I was thinking ahead to how my finished jack o lantern might look. With thoughts of grandeur I arrived at the community farm and with great anticipation I pushed opened the gate and entered the apple orchard. Bright orange
The teacher talks about what kind of things they can see in the field trip ( Pumpkin Patch). Everyone wants to say something, but Rayle doesn’t show motivation to participate in the conversation. She is looking around the classroom. Then, the teacher asks her, are you excited to go to the Pumpkin Patch? She spends a minute thinking and after that, she says “I wannnnts to go”, “My daddy is goooooing, too”.
“If you have ever slept on an island you will never be quite the same” (Unknown). I have slept on an island and it truly has changed who I am today. This little island is called Pumpkin Knob and sits in Casco Bay, Maine. It is a place that has inspired and moved me to see life in a different perspective. It all started back when I was three months old, on July fourth weekend, and ever since then my family and I have traveled the distance to stay on our little island of Pumpkin Knob. Till this day I do not know why this place has changed me so, maybe its that every year the island has changed itself. The newly grown lilies in the garden, the freshly trimmed grass, the overgrown bushes on the trails or maybe it’s the new faces I see
There are very little people from the church that can help out in the “Pumpkin Patch.” Before the fundraiser starts in the beginning of October, the people of the church have a big meeting that they make sure that all people who need to attend is there and they describe what their goal is and how they are going to make it there. Mrs. Cheryl and Mrs. Kristy make sure that they know who is going to volunteer and make sure that if something happened that they know how to fix it before it gets out or big. Mrs. Kristy sometime go to Mrs. Cheryl’s office or get a call from Mrs. Cheryl, if can’t come before the event start on that
Today I went to the Lantern for the first time. When we arrived and signed in we were told to just go hang out in the living room area and talk to the residents that Cathy would be there around three. We got to talk with the residents and paint pumpkins. The residents are a true blessing.
SUMMERTIME HAS ARRIVED, AND ON the "cooler" days, we can work in our gardens and spruce up our lawn decorations. For some of us, that means we can fuss over our garden gnomes and other colorful knick-knacks and statues. Mankind has been adorning their gardens with small statuary ever since antiquity. Historically, many of these early figurines were religious in nature; but, over the centuries, these “garden protectors” were embraced by the whimsical world of folklore.
Mac Hammond is able to use colorful words, such as butcher knife, throughout “Halloween” that brings the reader closer to the poem. Halloween is a nostalgic holiday for most people and there are specific words that will trigger those memories. Hammond exclaims, “The butcher knife goes in, first, at the top / And carves out the round stemmed lid” (1-2). There are numerous words used just in these two lines that can connect us with the poem. No one can talk about Halloween or pumpkins without the word carved involved. Whenever one starts to carve a pumpkin, they have to carve out that circle at the top so the center can be accessed. Hammond does a great job of painting that picture by using the words such as “carves”,
If you're looking for a good pumpkin, then don't choose me. I mean, who wants a pumpkin with three flaws. I wouldn't want to get a pumpkin with these flaws. The flaws I have are bad. I have holes, i'm smelly, and I am square.
The first thanksgiving was way different today than it was 100 years ago. How the first thanksgiving started with the harvest celebration of pilgrims and the native americans that took place in the autumn of 1621. The first thanksgiving was not a celebration back then it was more like a gathering. Usually on our thanksgiving dinner table we would have turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls, cornbread, and a sweet treat of pumpkin pie. Back then they simply had turkey a little bit of bread because the dough was very rare and hard to make, And pumpkin pie if they were lucky because of the rare dough.
As the second cycle began, the children had completed their clean up routines and were now gathering in a group to participate in their morning circle activities. Mrs. Eady lead the children through the days of the week, the calendar, word wall, reviewing of the classroom rules, music and movement, and a reading of the book, “The Plumply Dumply Pumpkin.” While most of the activities were teacher chosen, the children had an active role in the lessons. Each child had the opportunity to lead part of the lesson, both in reviewing the word wall and the classroom rules. Throughout the activities, children could stand up and move and openly share their thoughts. When children did share their thoughts, the teacher encouraged them to express themselves
With fall approaching, it is that time of year that everything is pumpkin flavor. With many different options of pumpkin flavor from pumpkin spice latte, pumpkin pie, and my favorite pumpkin bread. Making pumpkin bread is simple and loved by everyone who loves pumpkin flavors. Pumpkin bread is something anyone can make if they just follow three simple steps: preparation, mixing, and the baking process.
The story “Pumpkins” was first published in the journal “Western Humanities Review”. This journal accepts online submissions only, and charge a small submission fee. Flash fictions must be at 1,000 words or less, but authors can submit multiple submissions, as
When November the 21st hits the calendar, everyone is up for the start. Grocery stores are packed with a whole bunch of people, shopping carts are filled with harvests and the cashiers’ lines are long. But, that’s just the start of grocery shopping which, everyone hates because we’re quite impatient. The best and fun part of Thanksgiving is preparing the food and eating it. For every Thanksgiving, my mom and I and other people within my culture prepare “Soul food”. Soul food includes a variety of different meals, like cheesy baked macaroni, sweet, cinnamon candy yams, rotisserie turkey and more. Many people don’t know a lot about Soul food “until you take a yellow school bus through the African American culture”.
The club event I went to was the pumpkin patch at Gordon Skagit Farms which was held by the C.H.E.F club on October 24th at 2:00pm. The purpose of the event was to find pumpkins to carve for a pumpkin carving contest for another event at the college where all of the clubs come together to promote their club as well as celebrate Halloween. Some of us went by car and others grouped up to take the van that was provided day of. I took some mini polaroid photos of the farm and picked out a pumpkin to carve just for fun. In addition, I later found out that I won third place for the pumpkin carving competition which took me by surprise because I had no expectations of even placing in the competition.
The film It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown shows the transition of Sparky's work from being just a newspaper cartoonist to a well known and published cartoonist who gets to build his story into TV specials. In the Halloween special, we had Charlie Brown get the short end of the stick by having a ghost costume with one too many eyes in it and getting only rocks for Halloween, Snoopy and his adventures of chasing the Red Baron, and a presence of the rest of the peanuts gang going to Violets party and Trick-or-Treating. First watching the Halloween special I did not see that it had much to do with religion, but looking at the special in a different aspect, and reading the chapter about Sparky's ideas and formation of the show I found
Later in the day people needed more pumpkins so i had to ride the ranger down there do get more and bring
