"Coloring Can Change Lives: Crayon Collection Founder Sheila Michail Morovati." Interview by Kristin Cruz. Motivation. BlogTalkRadio. New York, New York, 6 Oct. 2015. Radio.
In the radio interview, “Coloring Can Change Lives” with Crayon Collection Founder Sheila Michail Morovati, Kristin Cruz discusses the inspiration for the founding of the Crayon Collection. The interviewer, as well as the interviewee, explain an upcoming crayon event, the vision for Crayon Collection, and how to support the cause. This account is helpful to my research since my group is donating our recycled crayons to this company. Furthermore, it presents information about the amount of crayons produced, how many are thrown away each year, and how this affects the environment. For example, Morovati says, “They [crayons] take 10 years to decompose and so it’s really horrible for the environment…” (Cruz). We will use this information to show the benefit and the harm of the petroleum-based art supplies in landfills.

The author explains the benefits of the art supplies, the environmental problems resulting from a large amount of crayon wax in landfills, and how donating the crayons will benefit the environment. This information provides general facts about crayon waste, which is helpful for my research because the problem our project is based on the negative effects of discarding crayons. The reason companies recycle crayons is because, “The wax from crayons is not biodegradable and will never break down, leaving a waxy sludge in our landfills for centuries to come” (“What We Do”, Paragraph 2). We will use this information to explain to others why it is a smart choice to give unused crayons to companies like Crayon
The author proves the falsehood of the long known assumption that plastic is a threat to our planet. By citing the research done by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the author convinces his readers that not only are plastic bags not harmful as people think, but also beneficial. This surprises his audience and shows them how exaggerated the cries of environmentalists, which gets the readers wondering what else have they falsely believed in and what other information are paper-bags advocates hiding from them, and that pulls them into the argument and intrigues them further. Additionally, Summers lists the harmful consequences of using reusable bags by presenting research results and observations. This alarms the audience and raises concern in their
What does the increase of individuals who self-identify as multiracial mean for the color line as those who come from mixed-race grow up and have their own children? How will that affect racial categories? These questions are answered in article 11 titled Beyond Black and White: Remaking Race in America by Jennifer Lee and Frank D. Bean, in the book Rethinking the Color Line by Charles A. Gallagher.
In the article “ Baby bottoms and environmental conundrums: disposable diapers and the pediatrician” by Marianne B Sutton; Michael Weitman; Jonathan Howland. The authors mention that disposable baby diapers cause harm to people and the environment when in landfills, and in some cases they get shipped off to other countries when the landfills get filled. Diapers make up 5% of household waste and 1% to 3% of solid waste in the United States (Marianne B Sutton; Michael Weitman; Jonathan Howland). However, this a problem with a solution such as using reusable diapers when possible to minimize the amount of disposable diapers being thrown out.
Life in colors In the short story Crayons by Janelle M Masters tells the story of a kindergarten teacher who was asked by her little student the right way to say crayons. This question brought up the teacher’s memories from when she was a young student. Masters makes great use of flashback, symbolism and hyperbole to express the theme of passion. For her crayons wasn’t just a small stick of colored wax used for drawing, but also something she was really passionate about, and the main reason why she decided to follow the career of being a kindergarten teacher..
In this chapter, Mrs. Williams explores society 's failure to deal straightforwardly with the practice of exclusion. This is something that infects everyone, from the very old to the very young, and Mrs. Williams does a great job of pointing these things out. As I proceeded to read this piece, I found myself being able to relate and agree with a lot of the things Mrs. Williams spoke on. The truth of the matter is the fact that society puts emphasis on things that do not really matter and not enough emphasis on things that really matter is a big problem in today 's world. We are currently living in a society that attempts to hide things from our youth as if this is benefiting them. "Protecting our
Racial bias and discrimination have historically constricted African Americans from living free and prosperous lives. Especially, in America’s Progressive Era when “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” happened to be published. This groundbreaking essay, written by Zora Neale Hurston, provided African Americans with a unique approach to defying racial discrimination. Namely, Hurston’s unique defense from societal discrimination is in her steadfast optimism towards the limitations of being African American. Therefore, Hurston’s essay achieved more than bringing hope to African Americans it also provided a solution in this period of bitter adversity. This is what distinguishes Nora’s essay from other literary works because it focuses on modeling a beneficial mindset rather than listing the hardships that black people are subjected to. Zora Neale Hurston is an influential role model for African Americans, she argues that racial discrimination and unjust biases can be overcome by having pride and optimism in the progression of one’s race.
Prometheus: Titan God of Forethought Greek Mythology is the legends and myths created by the Ancient Greeks. An important being in Greek legend is Prometheus. Prometheus, an infamous figure in Greek mythology, was an example of turmoil –always being in the wrong in someone else’s eyes. Although he is somewhat famous, his family is obscure. Prometheus has several legends to his name, some more famous than others.
Given historical context, colorblindness (ignoring race) is not the key to resolving the wealth gap. The achievement gap between whites and non-whites was created by institutional policies, government sanctioned policies that created an inherently unequal system, and only something of the like can undo that damage. This would require an understanding of the disadvantages and advantages of being identifiably a certain race. Society is led to believe that the civil rights movement ended inequality. On one hand, it did end inequality of opportunity. On the other hand, however, the damage already done, the underlying economic and social inequalities that were at this point firmly entrenched in society, went unaddressed. Equal opportunity, then,
The post-Civil Right era has seen the dismantle of racial categorization based on Biology. The theory that race influences the psychological, cultural and socio-economic aspect of one’s life has predominantly vanished. This accomplishment left a void for those who needed the biological discourse of race to establish their racist ideology. Colorblindness is the new methodology of implementing or otherwise avoiding the existence of racism. Its proponents predominantly assert its validity through the concept of the Civil Right Movement and the distorted understanding of the fact that “race is a social construct.” While the phrase implies that race is an illusion and nonexistent in nature, it also contains an often overlooked acknowledgment of race being an influential reality under the consideration of its social construction.
The Great War pitted the Allied Powers of Great Britain, France, Italy, Russia, and the United States of America, against the Central Powers, a confederation formed by Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. The Austro-Hungarian Nation led the opening volley of this war, later known as World War I, through a hostile action against Serbia on July 28, 1914 and their subsequent effort to acquire allies in this aggression. The Ottoman Empire and Germany joined Austria-Hungary to form the Central Powers on August 1st, despite the Ottoman Empire’s reluctance to acknowledge their support. Importantly, the Central Powers required the aid of the Ottoman Empire as they controlled a significant amount of land with oil reserves. The early 20th
Many people think that to be courageous you have to do things like run into a burning building to save other people’s lives, but even small things require courage. For example riding a bike for the first time, talking to the girl you like, and sitting by the unpopular kids at school all require different amounts of courage.
The United States produces roughly 250 million tons of solid waste, or garbage, on an annual basis. This number equates to 4.4 pounds of solid waste created by every American on a daily basis (Miller, Meindl, & Caradine, 2016). The recycling rate in the U.S. is around 35%, meaning over 165 million tons of waste is placed in the nation’s landfills or incinerated each year (Mozo-Reyes, Jambeck, Reeves, & Johnsen, 2015). Landfilling recyclables contributes to a greater strain on global resources because materials that may have been reused must now be replaced (Miller, et.al. 2016). Landfilling waste also contributes to air pollution through the release of methane (Delkash, Zhou, and Singh, 2016) and poses threats to groundwater near landfills (Talalaj & Biedka, 2016). As the population of the nation (and the world) increases, strategies must be found to reuse resources rather than simply disposing of them.
Based on the findings that one has discovered in life itself, in essence, color helps with the flows of life in a way that it can determines your thoughts, emotions, and decisions. In my research I gained a vast amount knowledge and from what I’ve learned; now I can explain colors in depth, with a great amount of detail. If colors were non-existent, then, there would be a very grey look upon life. Colors brings forth light, and the light brings forth living. The world displays colors for a reason and it’s very important to life.
This research question aims to think deeper on the circumstances of the overuse of plastic and paper, and what could happen more to the animals/birds, our environment, and our bodies if consumers keep on using plastic and paper products. This research question should be asked to raise awareness to users and most importantly designers, so they consider using other eco friendly material in designing their products.
Color fills our world with beauty. We delight in the colors of a magnificent sunset and in the bright red and golden-yellow leaves of autumn. We are charmed by gorgeous flowering plants and the brilliantly colored arch of a rainbow. We also use color in various ways to add pleasure and interest to our lives. For example, many people choose the colors of their clothes carefully and decorate their homes with colors that create beautiful, restful, or exciting effects. By their selection and arrangement of colors, artists try to make their paintings more realistic or expressive.
