Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe …show more content…
The most important improvement for me in this course was on my grammar. I was not aware of the comma rules before. It was shocking to see where commas are to be put and the places that I usually miss. The Hacker lessons we did in and out of class on commas have improved my grammar significantly. Looking back through all of my graded essays it is unbelievable how many commas I have actually missed. Also, writing the essays in MLA format and including work cited entries and quotations, has helped me become more comfortable with it. When I write essays now, I do not hesitate or get anxious if I have to add a work cited entry. However, even though I have know a little bit more of when to use commas and have a little bit more knowledge about grammar there is still a lot of room for improvement. Some areas where I need to improve include transitions between paragraphs, being to repetitive, and my conclusions. This class has definitely helped me make my transitions better; however they still could use some improvement. I have to make sure that the reader can comprehend my thought process and that my transitions do not get in the way of the flow of the paper. In some of the rough drafts for my essays I could not find links between paragraphs at all but after work shopping in class I believe that they have significantly improved. I also need to make sure that I do not repeat the same ideas or words too many
I tried to other outcomes to what I have mastered or at least made a small advancement towards in this class besides my vocabulary choices and a better sense of illustration. Maybe a better sense of organization and writing integrity could be added to better research methods. I would love to say there is more to my outcomes of this class but for me, these improvements are a really good step to a better writing
This semester in ENG 101 I went in with a better perspective and view of what the class would be like versus last semester when I hated that I had to enroll in ENG 100E. I knew that it would be similar to ENG 100E but with more emphasis on writing and actually putting to use everything that we learned last semester. Although my ACT score was the reason that I was in ENG 100E last semester I am really thankful that I had to take that class, because it actually helped me this semester with ENG 101. This semester I was more involved and actually participated versus last year where I rarely opened up to answer any questions in class. I as well feel as if taking 100E has helped me this semester to become a better writer with adding more description to my essays to make the reader actually visualize what they are reading or have read. Even though I still may not be the best writer I am able to see for myself that I am no longer that inexperienced writer who’s blinded by their writing errors. I am able to take advice from others for my writing without being offended my mistakes, and I know that they are just trying to help me in the long run.
A semester has passed since I started college and my journey of becoming a better writer. It has been a very important semester for my future college career, and I would not be here without the things I have accomplished. The composition program has really helped me to prepare for what college writing is all about. Now standing here and looking back I could not imagine how it would be without that class. I believe my English, and my writing is better than it has ever been, and all thanks to the composition program.
There was many steps that helped me improve in this class including drafts and peer-evaluation worksheets. Having a rough draft is one of the best ways to help me improve on my essays because it gives me a professional eye to see the problems that I’m not able to. Discussing the prompts of our essays had benefited me because it gave me a sense of direction of where I should start and another perspective. Peer-evaluation worksheets are also one of the great tools used to improve my writing because it gave me a different approach on my essay that is by peers. They wrote some particularly useful revisions I should make to increase the value of my writing. By having a rubric to follow as guidelines had immensely improved
I entered the fall semester viewing myself as a non-writer. I have always had trouble getting the ideas and thoughts out of my head and onto paper. I have always been more comfortable stating aloud what I thought as opposed to writing them down. This semester has taught me a great deal. I have learned that I am capable of accomplishing college level writing. Even more, I have learned that I can focus and dig deeper to add more detail than I had thought I could when I started this semester.
Throughout the course of this semester, I have learned so much about writing. I used to think writing was my best skill in terms of school, but after taking this course, I realized I have a lot to learn still. In high school English was always my highest grade because of my writing, my writing in my SAT scores was always the highest, and last semester in ENGL 1301, I got a high A in the course. But this course has challenged me as a writer to think outside of the box and be more academically smarter in terms of writing. The journals have helped me write about things that we like more than the other assignments because it gives us more freedom and flexibility about what we can write about. These journals are being used as a tool as practice
My first sense of improvement was with our Discussion Board assignments. At the beginning of the course, it would take hours to come up with something and then I still didn’t feel my posting
In writing, making a good paper isn’t as simple as putting some words on a paper and calling it good. It is something that takes time to perfect.
When I first decided to take the class I didn't expect much from it, except for writing tons of essays each week. My expectations were not high because I knew it was another core class I had to get through. However, my expectations were completely overturned after taking this class for a semester. Instead of writing essays each week we had free writing, a walking journal, interesting articles to read, and most importantly lots of interaction with our peers. This class was nothing what I expected and I was really surprised how it turned out to be one of my favorite classes I have taken so far. I have learned so much about improving my writing and grammar, authors, techniques in writing, and even how to cope with stress and organize my thoughts back in order. I learned all about polemic and dialectic writing as
This class has taught me things that may help my writing, and also things that I don’t find as useful. I thought practicing comma rules gave me a better understanding of punctuation, but I still don’t fully understand passive and active sentence structure. I’ve explored different ways to write a paper and realized my favorite is starting with an outline. I try to get all of my ideas organized where I want them before going in and writing pages at a time. I never found peer editing quite as useful, because a lot of times I don’t like having other students read my work. All of these examples have lead me to become the writer I am now compared to the beginning of the semester.
Some of these things I'm looking to improve have already come with the few classes we have had, and that has me motivated to strive for the best and better myself in an area where i feel i could improve: and a critical one at that as writing is a skill that is never wasted and carried on throughout a lifetime. By the end of this course, i am hoping i have a better understanding of how to write at a more professional level and to learn to express myself in a way that is heard by the readers without compromising the beliefs that they may
As a writer, I would like to think that I have progressed a little bit throughout the semester. From the Doyle essay to the Food and Identity paper, there has been some improvements. I feel I have improved when it comes to writing papers that need sources like the what if essay and the food and identity essay. I feel like my creativity aspect has improved a little due to the Doyle essay. This class has also helped me gain a different perspective of other people’s ideas and opinions. I think that is the most helpful thing that I have used
I have improved in numerous ways during this semester in Composition 1. I have enhanced my writing skills such as being able to write proficiently, and being able to form an essay in a set amount a time similar to the 50 minute essay tests in class. This course has taught me to broaden my vocabulary throughout my essays in order for them stimulating and captivating. While writing essays and creating the works cited pages, I have learned to accurately cite websites, books, and articles. I have also learned to suitably place and refer to where I found the material used for the essays within, and at the beginning of, paragraphs. When writing my essays I have learned to transition smoothly, however, I still struggle with it every once in a while, the writing I do continues to enhance. My speech has also improved from standing in front of the class and presenting a group project along with fellow classmates. I now know what it is like and what to expect the next time I do it. I have improved in many ways during this course and I feel, overall, the portfolio represents my progress greatly.
The three major essays were a source of both frustration and revelation. Each essay reflected back to me what I am comfortable with, such as the documented argument, and areas that I am not so comfortable with, such as the narrative essay. All of the assignments showed me that a major weakness that I need to improve on is my grammar and spelling. In the end, I would say that I am a better writer and have a better understanding of the different components of writing than I did at the start. That being said, this is only writing 101 and I am very aware that I have significant room for improvement. Overall, I leave this class, more comfortable and knowledgable about the writing process and more aware of where I could improve to become a better
Mostly I struggled with the MLA format, using multiple source , and my thesis statements. For example, in essay 3 my thesis statement was “In society, it has been a cultural idea for years that females cannot do male things.” I could have made that better and told a story to have the reader more excited about hearing what I was going to say next. The things that came easily to me are the body paragraphs, organization structures, supporting details, using correct grammar, and my conclusions. For example, in essay 1 my conclusion said “All in all, I feel as if the word holds a certain importance to me now that I use it so much. I don’t like anybody outside my friend group to use it the way we use it because I feel we should always claim ownership to the way it’s used right now. There are some people outside of my friend group that has caught onto it and now use it daily, but as long as they know who originated the way it is used I guess it will be fine. My friends and I are just different in a way where we don’t do what everyone else is doing and like to start stuff on our own for each other to use or benefit from. We are pretty far from normal, but we just like to set trends and not follow the trend. I believe that is what will lead us to the path of success in the future.” I feel I do a good job wrapping everything up I talked about in the essay and provided a good closure for my audience. After being in English 151 I have gotten better at realizing my
