In writing, making a good paper isn’t as simple as putting some words on a paper and calling it good. It is something that takes time to perfect. Since this class started my approach writing has changed drastically. I am no longer waiting until the very last moment to start writing, expect that one time. I am trying to take more time in proofreading and editing. I try to get it done so that I have a few days to sit on it, then go back and see what I could add or change to make it better. Some things, though I still need to work on. Like any good writer, nothing can be perfectly produced. I still need to be observant of where I am putting commas and if they are in the right spot. I also need to take the time to read over the words and make sure that I have the right one where it should be. So many times have made a spelling error because I didn’t take the time to check because the word wasn’t underlined. My goal is to be more observant in my writing capabilities. …show more content…
If I had been thinking, I would have stayed on top them and improved my writing capabilities much earlier in the year. I believe that no red inks have helped a lot. I also feel like having examples of each type of paper, with both good and bad examples, helped me so I had an idea of how to do them properly. Additionally, having the ability to use websites like paper rater has certainly made it easier to find the small mistakes that I missed when proofreading it myself. Without these tools, it would have been much more difficult for me to spot little things I don’t even think about in my
What has most helped me? Possibly free-writing like now when I chase the stampeded of words that are bulldozing through my brain running form me faster than I can get them down on paper. The writing is apt to come out confused and bewildered, but then I follow Ayn Rand's recommendations I have read many writing manuals and have found hers the most valuable to just shut the brain off and write. Later, I adopt the procedure of three revisions. One is to see whether the prose makes sense to an imaginary reader. The next is to see whether I can prune words as ruthlessly as possible (sometimes, I end up annihilating too many); and thirdly to see whether grammar matches.
I hate reading and writing I never show interesting and I thought it was boring and just slept the whole period. But taking English 096 in my first semester at Harold Washington has impacted my writing skills in a positive way. This class helped me to learn more the skills I needed to become a better writer I college and for my future. Professor Thomas helped me with my writing and showed me that I do not have to be a perfect writer to get my point across. Like every writer we have are weaknesses and are strongest strategies. One of my weak is brainstorming ideas for my topic or how to compare two stories. But the class thought me how to comprehend the stories and try to make things they have in common. English 096 have also helped me to communicate more with my peers. My peers will help me revise my writing and make common so I can fix them and just make my final draft. I changed how I write because when the semester I was as good as a writer because I thought it was boring. But time passed I started to feel interesting and with the help of the professor I started to write better. The professor was determined to make us better writer. He would do every morning warm up and it seems small but it had an impact of how I write. Because I learned little things I never heard about.
In Freshman Composition I learned what metacognition means, and how it applies to academic writing. Next I learned about textual evidence and backing up your opinions with research. *I expect this class to help develop my writing skills, as well as find my voice in writing, all together I expect this class to be challenging but rewarding. Therefore I have set a few goals for myself, my first goal is to step out of my comfort zone and research topics I have never heard of before. My second goal is to not second-guess myself on my writing topics and/or choices. Furthermore I expect great things to come from this
I have definitely learned a lot more from College Writing II than I thought I would have. When this class started, I was not excited, because I have never liked writing, and felt that I was not very good at it. Now it’s coming to an end and fast. I always enjoyed coming to class because it went by quickly and was never dull. It started with free writes to help with our fluency, to class discussions, peer editing, and having Dr. White revise our essays. All these of have helped me with the writing process and becoming a better writer.
Overall, I feel that both my quality of writing and writing process have improved over the course of the semester. This was important because in my first writing analysis statement at the beginning of the year, the two main things that I wanted to improve on were my quality and process. Throughout the semester, I learned to rely less on teacher comments and revisions and instead improve on my self-revision process, which was almost non-existent before I came to college.
Students are subjected to write an array of essays, but they lack the required tools needed to effectively deliver a great paper. They are struggling to write and teachers are needing to design and conform to their current student’s needs. New methods are created and implemented in order to execute the daunting task of learning how to write a well-developed paper. Practical recommendations are brought forth for teachers to use and good teachers will learn to design instruction and activities based on suitable references. Teachers must set goals and deliver their lesson with specific strategies to meet their objectives. They must learn to improve skills dramatically by observing and modifying the students. Teachers must plan strategies in order to help the struggling students catch up or exceed in their writing skills. They must learn to motivate their students by keeping them engaged throughout the writing process if not they risk losing the student’s ability and focus to do better.
In the first assignment, I assessed my writing with the online tool PaperRater. The score received was below average on almost all fronts, which surprised me. I established a goal to be writing weekly and applying online tools to provide feedback. While I have not completed this goal in a way I expected, my writing style has been enhanced. I put this improvement down to my research and study throughout this unit, as well as entering into a new workplace that requires a higher level of professionalism than my previous workplace.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe
Before I came to college I thought that I was pretty excellent at writing. The first time I got a paper back I was devastated. My paper was plagued with red ink splotches. Thereafter, I was determined to write a better paper. Though, there are many things I struggle with; I am bound to enlightenment.
During this semester, I have strengthened my writing by trying new writing techniques, learning about purpose, and finding new ways of combating writers block. My first essay in this class was less focused then the essays I wrote later in
Since beginning to write papers in English class, I have had countless successes and failures. While many of my English classes have taught me how to improve my writing, I have not learned very much in others. My most recent English class was last year, my sophomore year. My class was particularly undersized; therefore, it gave each student the opportunity to have additional individual attention. Throughout the class I experienced high points, weaknesses, and even difficulties that I never overcame. Overall, my writing skills improved, but only marginally.
I believe that my approach to writing has changed over the course of the semester. My confidence in my writing has grown, as well as my knowledge in sentence structure, grammar, and word choice. At the beginning of the year, I doubted my writing abilities, but at this point, I feel as though I can handle large, intricate papers. I did not expect my writing to change drastically, but I did expect the small, technical details in my papers to improve, and I think they did. Overall, I have grown about as much as I expected to as a writer, and it has been very beneficial.
When I first started this course I didn’t know what to expect. I really enjoyed writing but there was a lot of areas that I needed to work on. When I first started to review the modules I was blown away by all the helpful sites that were at my disposition. The Power points and different sites completely changed my whole perspective of writing to a whole new dimension. Thanks to the modules I am more confident right now before I even begin an essay. I remember in the past how beginning an essay was so difficult for me because I didn’t know how to even start. In this course I have learned how to begin an essay, how to manipulate information, and how to use in-text documentation properly. These are just some of the few things that I will definitely be taking with me in the future for my courses and personal growth.
Over the past few months, I have learned several different writing techniques. While all of the different types of papers were difficult to write, I believe that my writing skills have improved. In fact, I did not understand all of the assignments, but I did try to do my best on all of them. While I should have used more transitional words in between sentences and paragraphs, I feel that I learned a great deal. It is true that I have not had very much writing experience and the writing process is difficult for me. Sometimes, I do admit, it takes days to complete one assignment, but it will be worth it when I am a proficient writer.
Over the course of the semester, there has been numerous amount of areas where I believe I have improved in comparison to high school. What has helped me in my writing is the writing class and the in-class writing workshop. The writing class that is located in the Kremen education building has helped me with my writing greatly because in the writing center the person in charge teach us lenses and we apply those lenses to the writing, draft, or reading that someone brings in. The in-class writing workshop has helped me because other students get to read my writing. This is helpful because I get feedback from many students and they let me know what needs to be fixed. A new tool I have been using is They Say I Say. The book is very helpful because of the information and examples it provides such as the templates. I have been applying the templates into my essays and I have seen a significant difference.
