Veterinarian Personal Statement

After interviewing Dr. Jess our family vet, I discovered that you can get into vet school right off the bat, but it’s extremely difficult to get in due to the fact that less than 50% of applicants are accepted, therefore many receive their undergrad before vet school. Dr. Jess also told me lots on what veterinarians truly do. One negative I discovered is that there is lots of record writing and talking amongst the owner of the pet, and not as much hands on activity with the animals-- meaning lots of desk work which goes against my value of adventure. This is due to the fact that it’s important to educate people who are caring for their pets at home. But, one positive is that there is a lot less stress in this job, due to the fact that you are around animals that are scientifically proven to lower stress levels. Dr. Jess also said that one of the biggest reasons she loves her jobs is that helping animals actually makes a difference especially in the community, because it makes people happy. One thing Dr. Jess really emphasized was that you have to take a wider view upon the animal, and that you don’t just fix him or her up. You have to teach a client how to do things properly at home, in order to prevent future illnesses and or injuries. I chose the career of a Vet Technician. This job is often confused with the veterinarian or veterinary technologist. These two fields are totally different than a vet technician. Veterinarian required eight years of schooling, where the Veterinary technologist requires a bachelor degree in applied science. The job of an veterinary technician is to provide nursing care and assist surgeries for animals. Think of it as a human nurse, and a doctor, the vet tech assist the veterinarian in diagnosing illness and injuries. Some other jobs a veterinary technician might have would be preparing an animal for a surgery like a scrub with germicidal soap, sterilizing the surgical utensils, setting up a room

The interactions I had with the beautiful animals fostered a fascination that would stay with me for years. Despite this passion, I was never able to ride or own a horse because of the expenses and attention they require. But at the age of twelve my dad signed me up to volunteer at HETRA, giving me the incredible opportunity to work closely with the animals I loved so much. Although I was concerned about jumping into something that I had never done before, I soon found my confidence. The volunteers and instructors made me feel welcome and helped me learn the all of the procedures.

My journey into veterinary medicine has been driven by a profound passion for animals, which was ignited by a pivotal event in my life. As a child, like many, I harbored a deep affection for animals, but it wasn't until a critical moment that I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to their care, advocacy, and education. The turning point came when our family kitten was tragically attacked by a dog, leaving her seriously injured. Witnessing this event was emotionally intense and eye-opening.

In this essay I am going to tell you what a Veterinary Technician does and how to become one. I am going to be talking to you about a Veterinary Technician. The definition of a Veterinary Technology is the study of procedures used in the medical care of animals. I am interested in this because I love animals.

There is a lot of hard work put into this job, maintaining the health of all the animal patients. The overall job description of a veterinarian is a doctor who, “care[s] for the health of animals and work[s] to improve public health. They diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals” (Veterinarian). Vets also provide emergency care for injured animals as well as provide euthanization for animals unable to be treated effectively. There are several different kinds of vets, each with different daily tasks and patients to work on. The type of vet everyone usually first thinks of is a Clinical Vet, also known as a Companion animal Veterinarian. They treat regular household pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, etc. This type of vet’s work environment usually includes being in private clinics and animal hospitals most of the time but can travel to farms and homes if needed. This is the most common field veterinarian students pursue. Another type is Equine Veterinarian. This type of vet focuses just on treating and caring for horses. They spend most of their times on ranches, and also at places like horse racing tracks and shows. Large Animal Veterinarians treat large farm animals such as horses, cows, sheep and pigs. Becoming a veterinarian takes a lot of hard work and many years of schooling, but it is an immensely satisfying job for those that are comfortable with and passionate about working with animals as well as people. Veterinarians offer medical care to by diagnosing and treating sick animals, which are often household pets, farm animals, and zoo animals. While looking into becoming a veterinarian, many factors of the job need to be taken into consideration: education and experience requirements, working facilities, job outlook, advancement opportunities, salary and wages, tasks performed, and advantages and disadvantages.

Some people choose particular jobs because of their interest. Others select career paths based upon factors such as projected salary, the ease of obtaining the job, and/or the hours associated with said job. Regardless, for most individuals, they simply pick a vocation. That certainly not the case in my situation; rather, I have always loved working and taking care of horses. Being a equine veterinarian is a unique job, “only 9% of veterinarians are equine veterinarians” (Horse Veterinarian: Job Description & Career Info. 1). Becoming an Equine veterinarian requires a significant quantity of post-secondary education, a rigorous application process, and numerous aspects associated with the job.

A British actress named Hannah Murray once said, “I really loved animals when I was little - my friend and I had an imaginary vet 's office; we would mime doing surgery on animals. We treated more injuries than illnesses - fixing with a baby bear with a broken leg, removing a tumor. Of course, our surgeries would take about five seconds; that 's how good we were.” As far back as one girl can remember, she always had a pet of some kind. She currently has a pet dog, and she became sick, and would have seizures. When her mom and took her to the Vet’s office, she remembers how the doctor saved her dog’s life and how grateful she and her mother were to not lose a member of our family. The career of a veterinarian is a rewarding career, because one has the opportunity to care for beings who can’t for themselves. The research will describe the career of a veterinarian, what is required to become successful, and the impact this career has on society.

Veterinarians provide medical services for animals that are big and small. Helping sick animals weather they are big or small. They provide medicine for house pets and farm animals. When owners take there pet to the vet they are looking for someone to provide information to them about their animal. Some of the information given to the own is about how to properly care for your animal to make sure it grows the right why. Veterinarians are there to help animals no matter the size.

I began horseback riding at age four, and my equestrian pursuits have not only shaped who I am as an individual, but have kept me grounded. Working as a groom to afford riding lessons instilled a work ethic within me that has contributed tremendously to my academic successes. Rescuing a horse at a young age, and caring for him no matter the circumstance, has given me a strong sense of commitment that translates to all avenues of my life. Besides shaping my character, being entirely responsible for my horse throughout college urged me to find a productive balance in my life. Learning to make time for hobbies and other activities outside of academics has greatly improved my overall well-being, and is a lesson that will be invaluable as I pursue

I have also had a small amount of Equine husbandry and surgery assistant as well at Dr. Wendell Baker’s veterinary clinic, most of my experience surgery wise were several castrations, teeth floating, and restraining for x-rays. I have also had a great array of experiences while currently shadowing at the Cy-Fair Animal Hospital with Dr. Diarra Blue and Dr. Michael Lavigne in regards to small animal medicine. I have been exposed to so many situations and learned a very good amount of knowledge about veterinary medicine in general. Honestly I believe that everyone should contribute to society by doing what they love to do. I can honestly say that having a career as a veterinarian will allow me to serve society in the most effective way possible I want to help people by making sure their animals are one-hundred percent healthy, or help society with food safety by making sure livestock are safe and healthy for human consumption of those animals and their respective byproducts, or maybe be a part of maintaining and monitoring the health of certain wildlife for

Veterinary medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the diseases of animals. Treating pets is one of the most profitable fields in veterinary medicine. The proper vaccination of animals and the diagnosis of diseases are part of a veterinarian’s duties.

“Large-animal veterinarians, who commonly work with horses, cows, pigs, sheep, and other farm animals, often have mobile practices. They may travel all over the countryside at all hours of the day and night, performing urgent procedures on sick or injured animals. This type of veterinarian works mainly with food-producing animals on large, corporate-run farms” (SDMyLife).

Ever since I was a child I knew that I wanted to work with animals. Horses, in particular, have always fascinated me. After much begging, pleading, years of convincing, and always working hard to save up money, I convinced my parents to allow me to buy a horse. To me, Indie was the most beautiful quarter horse I could have ever dreamed of getting. Since our purchase of Indie, we have acquired another horse, Sherman, and a pony, Tucker. Although the horses have always been hard work, they were worth every sweaty hot summer evening of mucking out the stalls and frigid winter mornings of carrying water to the trough in order to avoid freezing our hoses. After all, I used to dream of being a veterinarian and helping all kinds of animals in some way.
