Although this statement is completely true, the treatment of dogs is not all that vets do. Cats, cows, parrots, and horses are just a few of the many other animals that veterinarians help. As you could probably guess, the profession of being a vet requires many years of education, being that the job requires you to have a good background knowledge of issues that animals may have. In this essay, I’m going to walk you through my educational path to accomplish my goal of becoming a Veterinarian.

A lot of the work performed by vets are treatment of the animals. So if they are sick, they will give them a checkup, test blood and maybe even do and x-ray. They also give advice to owners about breeding and care taking of the animal. Some vets may specialize in the care and treatment of either large or small animals. Small-animal vets will deal mostly with household pets, such as dogs, cats, birds, rodents, and reptiles. Usually they will work in cities and the owners have to bring their animals to them in their clinics.

When I think of veterinary medicine I think of an essential part of being a responsible pet owner. Veterinary medicine, much like human medicine, is necessary for the well being of not only us but our companions as well. In the case of zoonotic disease, early detection is key to ensure that the other members of the household don't fall ill. Veterinary professionals have the potential to have a highly rewarding career by improving the lives of pets and the people that love them. Veterinary facilities see dozens of patients a day of all shapes, sizes, and temperaments. Whether it be for simple routine checkups in a veterinary general practice clinic or saving a severely injured non-human member of the family at the emergency clinic, the entire veterinary team is essential to a smooth running facility. Doctors can tell what is wrong with your pet and prescribe treatment and medicine to make them feel better. Just like a regular doctor for humans, veterinarians, have to prescribe medications. There is a lot of hard work put into this job, maintaining the health of all the animal patients. The overall job description of a veterinarian is a doctor who, “care[s] for the health of animals and work[s] to improve public health. They diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals” (Veterinarian). Vets also provide emergency care for injured animals as well as provide euthanization for animals unable to be treated effectively. There are several different kinds of vets, each with different daily tasks and patients to work on. The type of vet everyone usually first thinks of is a Clinical Vet, also known as a Companion animal Veterinarian. They treat regular household pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, etc. This type of vet’s work environment usually includes being in private clinics and animal hospitals most of the time but can travel to farms and homes if needed. This is the most common field veterinarian students pursue. Another type is Equine Veterinarian. This type of vet focuses just on treating and caring for horses. They spend most of their times on ranches, and also at places like horse racing tracks and shows. Large Animal Veterinarians treat large farm animals such as horses, cows, sheep and pigs. Becoming a veterinarian takes a lot of hard work and many years of schooling, but it is an immensely satisfying job for those that are comfortable with and passionate about working with animals as well as people. Veterinarians offer medical care to by diagnosing and treating sick animals, which are often household pets, farm animals, and zoo animals. While looking into becoming a veterinarian, many factors of the job need to be taken into consideration: education and experience requirements, working facilities, job outlook, advancement opportunities, salary and wages, tasks performed, and advantages and disadvantages.

My initial interest in veterinary medicine began during my childhood when I developed responsibility in providing care for all animals. I had hands on experiences when exercising proper herd health techniques with our veterinarian for our cow/calf operation. I learned how to vaccinate, create a balanced nutritional diet, and prepare for each calving season. I also became fascinated with the human-animal bond when training a Leader Dog for the Blind and showing livestock around the state of Indiana. My experiences with having a connection with animals and taking care of them encouraged me to further investigate the veterinary profession.

Becoming a veterinarian requires long hours, commitment and a substantial financial investment. Veterinary School is generally four years long and during the second year students become familiar with veterinary care such as surgery, critical care, and euthanasia. There are several types of veterinary medicine that aspiring veterinarians will be exposed to during veterinary school. Some of which include, livestock, wildlife and equine medicine. Classes such as anatomy and physiology are required for students enrolled in a veterinary program. Upon completion of the program, students earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree. Most veterinary programs cost between 150,000 and 250,000 dollars in total.

I love animals and I would love to work with them. Ever since I was a little girl I knew I would want to work with animals because they interested me so much. Becoming a veterinarian isn’t just about playing with dogs and cats all day; you are actually in charge of taking care of them and this is a no messing around job. First off is Private practice, which is the most common and what most people will think of when talking about veterinary medicine. These are the veterinarians that would regularly perform check-ups on small and large animals, test them for infectious diseases, diagnose them and perform any medical or surgical treatments needed. This also includes veterinary technicians (vet techs) who work alongside the veterinarians, perform certain procedures and tests, and sometimes specialize in surgery or anesthesia.

Veterinarians have a job that acquires a long time to meet the requirements for education and training. The majority of people studying to become a veterinarian are required to go to college for eight years. Which is a longer time than a person studying to become a doctor to go to college. The reason is that veterinarians are required to learn about the different anatomical structures of several different animals. They must also learn about the illnesses that the animals may acquire and how to treat them.

The Amount of money you make depends on how much experience you have in the work area. “Earnings for veterinarians depend on experience, responsibilities, location, and employer” (John). When getting in to the work force of a veterinarian the amount of money you earn depends on what you can and cannot do. If you do not know as much as everyone else that just started out then you do not make as much money. Going to school and learning as much as you can then you can make a bunch of money. If at first school does not help you then keep on going at it and you can learn more then you ever thought you would. There is nothing wrong with needing more help when it comes to school if it helps you later in life to make more money. When first going in you can make $74,820 annually, median wage $96,260 and experienced wage is $123,500. The more you know the better chance of making more money. The amount of money you make depend on the amount of experience.

A career in being a veterinarian should be obtained by a person who enjoys caring for animals, and sometimes having to care for their owners when they have to make hard decisions. Before becoming, a veterinarian person should know the career proves to need a lot of education, but is well worth the work in the end. It is important to know a veterinarian’s regular duties, required education, and the possible salary before choosing a career in this field.
