Thomas Paine's Modes Of Persuasion

From the Crisis No.1 written by Thomas Paine and the Speech at the Virginia Convention by Patrick Henry were two major sources during the time of the Revolutionary War. Both speeches were persuasive and moving for the colonist. The common purpose of the revolutionary speeches during that time was to persuade the common people to become fully independent from tyranny. Even though the common purpose for both speeches was to separate from Great Britain, they both used different methods or strategies in their speeches like the tone, and how they appealed to the situation.

Thomas Paine uses pathos by comparison in order for the audience to feel a greater impact on the words that he has written. Henry first displayed ethos by respecting opposing viewpoints among the hostile crowd in the House of Burgesses. He states, “But different men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope that it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen, if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite to theirs, I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve” (Henry 226). Patrick Henry recognizes the magnanimity of the situation at hand and is cautious towards the emotions that he could evoke from his hostile audience. Typology has been used for many centuries and has gone through numerous changes. These changes range from legendary, Puritan storyteller Mary Rowlandson, onto the nature-loving, pastor Johnathan Edwards, as well as the historic Enlightenment, political thinker Thomas Paine. It is important to have an understanding of typology and its definition in order to be able to read and understand the profound concept that it is. It is basically looking at the stamp of life and interpreting it for what it is, rather than what it is like or what it could be. In typology there is an antitype and type. The antitype is unique, original that is difficult to mimic and understand; therefore, as an example, the antitype is a rubber stamp. The type is essentially the printed image or the imprint of the antitype. Typology has multiple definitions and there are various forms of typology, but we’ll focus on the one defined beforehand and look at three of its varying forms— the biblical typology of Mary Rowlandson, the natural typology of Johnathan Edwards, and the political typology of Thomas Paine. Typology’s many forms allow it to be incredibly diverse and the cause for the shift in its types will be discussed as well.

Paine closes up the paragraph by using an asyndeton, "Let them call me a rebel and welcome...but I should suffer the misery of devils were I to make a whore of my soul by swearing allegiance to one whose character is that of a sottish, stupid, stubborn, worthless, brutish man." His use of the asyndeton to show that the King is much more than that he listed.

Throughout history, there have been many prolific philosophers and writers who have created works and writings that have advanced the way society thinks about their lives and what exactly they want from the world. What they presented ranged from something as simple as new ideas and theories, or as large as a revolution. There are some, although barring a few differences, that tried to present similar ideas and writings to cause a change in processes and a different mindset for the people. Take the theories from John Locke’s The Social Contract and Thomas Paine’s radical beliefs from The Age of Reason. Both of these men attempted to introduce a change in the way society thought and lived through both their own opinions and the idea that all people are entitled certain rights upon birth. The two had similar reasoning and ideals when they were describing their vision of an ideal society. Although the two presented their beliefs for different reasons, both John Locke and Thomas Paine’s writings resulted in a major impact on the minds of the people, as well as changes in society, for years to come.

​Thomas Paine's Common Sense is a seminal piece of American literature and American history; arguably it's the most important piece. Paine wrote Common Sense in 1775-1776, and it's theme was to spread his political beliefs. He wanted American independence from the British monarchy. The pamphlet was anonymously released on January 10th, 1776, and it explained to the reader why the colonies needed to rebel against their British oppressors. It was sold far and wide across the colonies, and it was successful; it inspired many of the soldiers during the initial summer of rebellion in 1776. The whole idea of the pamphlet revolves around persuading the reader to side with the rebels in their valiant fight for independence, and he absolutely uses contemporary persuasive techniques in his writing. He uses facts about the present, he looks towards the future, and he uses religion to persuade his readers. In fact, it's a testament to how the act of persuasion has been very similar over the last 238

Throughout “The Age of Reason,” Thomas Paine gives several examples for why he is opposed to Christianity. Before I began reading this essay, I was absolutely positive that I was going to disagree with every point that Paine had to make and every opinion that he expressed. It did not take long for me to realize that I had made the wrong assumption. There was more than one occasion while reading “The Age of Reason” that I discovered I actually agreed with Paine's opinion/belief. This encouraged me to read “The Age of Reason” once again, but this time with an open-mind. I decided that I would also take notes on the similarities and differences between Paine's worldview and mine.
