The Speech at the Virginia Convention and the Crisis No.1
From the Crisis No.1 written by Thomas Paine and the Speech at the Virginia Convention by Patrick Henry were two major sources during the time of the Revolutionary War. Both speeches were persuasive and moving for the colonist. The common purpose of the revolutionary speeches during that time was to persuade the common people to become fully independent from tyranny. Even though the common purpose for both speeches was to separate from Great Britain, they both used different methods or strategies in their speeches like the tone, and how they appealed to the situation.

The purpose of Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence was to abolish all allegiances to Great Britain and be set free from unfair taxes, tyrannical rule, and unfair treatment. The purpose of Henry 's Virginia Convention Speech was to persuade the colonists to enter into war against Great Britain. Henry’s speech is more of a demanding than the Declaration of Independence. His tone is aggressive because he wants to persuade the audience to agree with what he believes is right. Henry wants the crowd to agree with him when he says powerful and memorable quotes such as “Give me liberty or give me death!” (Henry 230) He wants to American people to wake up, stand and fight against the injustice of Great Britain.
Patrick Henry evolved from being an attorney to becoming an influential and inspirational revolutionary who convinced the colonists to fight for independence. During this time the British ruled and colonists had begun to resist them. Furthermore, religious values were important in the time as most everyone belonged to a church. In his speech to the Virginia convention, Patrick Henry uses pathos to enact a sense of distrust and fear toward the British.
Patrick Henry, an attorney and politician, delivered a speech at St. John’s Church in Richmond. Virginia on March 23, 1775. This speech was later considered the “Give me Liberty or Give me Death” speech due to it’s powerful conclusion. In the speech Henry discusses the colonies’ freedom-freedom from the royal crown, Britain. He attempts to explain that this revolutionary war in inevitable and the more it was delayed, the more difficult it would be to fight for their freedom. Patrick Henry’s motivation behind this proclamation was to influence his audience into raising an army, to fight for independence. For decades, the colonists were under British control, but Patrick Henry used the power of rhetoric to motivate the colonists. Patrick Henry uses a number of rhetorical strategies to persuade the delegates that war against the British is absolutely needed for their freedom.
During the Revolutionary War, writers and orators publicly revealed their thoughts on how to respond to Britain’s further subjugation of the American colonies. After a futile hope for reconciliation and failed petitions to the British government, several patriots, such as Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry, called for the colonists to take up arms against the British. Through Paine’s Common Sense and Henry’s “Speech in the Virginia Convention”, they displayed an adamant message for the colonies to fight immediately. Both used the rhetorical elements of ethos, pathos, and logos within their respective works, and their various applications to the three elements allowed for their arguments to reach all ears and influence the majority of the population towards the fight for independence.
“Give me liberty, or give me death!” is a quotation attributed to Patrick Henry, which he used to close his speech to Virginia Convention. During this time period, the 1770s, Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, and Thomas Jefferson all made arguments in favor of separation of the American colonies from Great Britain; many of these appeals were persuasive for different reasons, whether that be logical, emotional, or pertaining to credibility and trust, which is to say logos, pathos, and ethos. First of all, we will examine Henry’s arguments during his speech at the Virginia Convention. Then, we will identify Paine’s appeals in a part of his essay, The Crisis n1. Lastly, we will evaluate Jefferson’s myriad of arguments in a part of his Autobiography.
In “speech in the Virginia convention,” Patrick Henry convinces colonists to fight Britain through the use of four main rhetorical devices: Allusion, Rhetorical Questions, Figurative language, and Diction. Through Figurative language, he connects to the audience by expressing emotions and explaining the main problems with peace negotiations. Patrick Henry uses allusion in his speech by telling people what is appropriate. Patrick Henry used also Rhetorical Questions to tell people what is right and what is not. He also used diction as the power to explain a topic in a short sentence.
“Give me liberty or give me death!” This statement from Patrick Henry’s “Speech to the Virginia Convention,” delivered to the House of Burgesses, has been quoted by many, becoming almost cliché. However, the declaration is truly understood by a select few. In the “Speech to the Virginia Convention” by Patrick Henry, his American dream is that the citizens of America should not be opposed by any oppressive leaders. He truly believes the people of America must fight for their freedom in order to achieve their own kind of American dream.
Context and quote- Henry makes an allusion to Homer’s Odyssey during his speech in the Virginia Convention. “We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts” (81).
Many began producing rhetoric speeches and poetry that showed their desire for independence and the anger that they were building up because they were turned down for their representation. A pamphlet titled the Common Sense by Thomas Paine brought upon the ideas that they should have independence from Britain and a republican government instead-this pamphlet became extremely popular and sold over 150,000 copies. The acts that did not give proper representation led the colonists to boycott and think individually for their country-it was a primary source to the revolutionary movement including the Revolutionary War that ended with success of the Americans.
