Texas traffic accidents leads the nation in car deaths. In some ways, the large number of crashes is to be expected; Texas is a very large state. However, the Texas death rate of 1.44 deaths per hundred million miles travelled also exceeds the national average of 1.28 deaths per hundred million miles travelled. In this proposal, I will provide accurate statistics of last year’s records and then provide a possible solution to reduce fatalities.

In 2016, 3,773 people died in a motor vehicle traffic accident and of that 3,773, 43.71% were reported not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred. While the least amount took place on tollways with just 13 fatalities. So what is so significantly different about traveling on tollways than highways? Well for one, you have to pay to get on the tollway so of course a lot less people travel on it. A possible theory to avoid heavy traffic, is to travel before or after rush hours to avoid congested roads.

People typically respond positively when it comes to free easy money. That’s why Allstate provides rewards to their auto insurance customers if they drive safe every year. This initiative can persuade drivers to improve driving performance so that they can receive a token of appreciation for driving safe. If this same idea is use in every single insurance company, it could reduce fatalities and prevent deaths on the road.

Texting while driving has now become an even more bigger issue and is done more often than driving under the influence. There were 109,658 traffic crashes in Texas involving distracted driving—up 3 percent over 2015. More than 3,000 people were seriously injured as a result, and 455 died. These crashes were highest among new and younger drivers ages 16 to 34. Distracted driving not only includes texting but also, eating, looking at social media, grooming, or even changing the song on the radio.
